kindness of strangers - alive and well

it's not too difficult to find yourself being cynical from time to time these days, what with the current worldy situation being all it is. but every once in a while smack dab in the middle of it, life can throw you a curveball and remind you that not all is as bad as it might appear.

this past weekend i received one of those reminders. i'm currently hiding up in seattle on business, without much to do other than work. last week ben mentioned that shelly lived out this way and i should drop her an email. i did so, not really expecting much to come of it. after all, it's a little awkward sending an email that says 'hi, this is scott from killoggs...' to a stranger, but even more awkward receiving such an email, i would imagine. but not only did i get a response, i also received an invitation to get together and grab a bite to eat then go catch a couple bands. long story short: i ended up going, having a great time, and meeting some great people.

the awesome poster above was made by shelly so that two killoggs heads could find each other on a busy street corner.

on the surface of it, nothing all that extraordinary happened - i emailed, we ate and drank, i left. but through the course of chatting, i found out ben had called from a metro stop to vouch for me. he really didn't have to take the time to do that, and i really appreciate it. thank you ben. and shelly didn't have to extend the invitation - i would have been more than happy if she'd just sent the link to her great seattle guide she posted awhile back. but i'm glad she did. thanks shelly. it was great meeting you and your crew.

in the grand scheme of things these two acts might not seem like much, but they mean a lot to me. it's amazing to be able to be a part of such a group of people that would gladly welcome near strangers into their lives. so thanks, killoggers. if you're ever in san francisco and need anything, feel free to drop me a line. it's the least i could do.

Shelly was going to let me crash on her couch when I was planning to visit Seattle. We've never met, but somehow, I know she's awesome.

don't forget the road trip to portland, loudly singing the replacements and danzig and making a movie about two girls who've never met before taking a road trip to portland and loudly singing the replacements and danzig the whole way.

Shelly is a great person. She is one of the people who I wished I had known better in BR.

Me too. I've gotten to know her better from killoggs and she's a super cool person. She helped me get through some really rough spots during my first six months here...just being there on online to chat.
shelly [email] said at 11:04 PM 03-25-2003:
aw shucks, ya'll.

scott was oh so generous and polite the whole time, especially while graciously and patiently driving around the loud and inebriated members of said "crew."
courtney [email] said at 12:26 AM 03-26-2003:
I'm definitely looking Shelly up when I go visit my friends in Vancouver. One of my goals is to meet a buncha heads in the coming year or two.
