Believe the Hype (or don't I couldn't care less)

I'll admit, I'm sorta late on the Battles bandwagon but boy am I glad I hopped on. This band is pretty amazing.

guess I muffed up the code or something, part of the right side is cropped.

i agree. i used to talk to ian, the guitar player, from time to time. he used to live in my neighborhood and we have a mutual friend (fred weaver). we had a really interesting discussion about hi-fidelity (ian was one of the dudes that hangs out in john cusack's record store).

    That's pretty sweet.

specifically he was in the scene where jack hits tim robbins over the head with an air conditioner. ian had real interesting assesment of jack black's acting approach vs. cusack's. he said cusack would vary the intonation of his line very slighty each take but jack black would do any entirely different comedy routine every take.

I could see that. Cusack's more of a Method-y actor while Black's a comedian. I think most comedians approach roles in a similar fashion. The really talented ones tend to just throw stuff out there with a good instinct for whether or not it will stick or not. He may be annoying but watch Robin Williams in just about any interview. I don't know if I mentioned on here before but I saw an episode of The Tonight Show a few years back in which someone decided it would be a good idea to book both Robin Williams and Tracey Ullman on the same show. I don't know what was more humorous Williams' and Ullman's interplay or watching Jay Leno trying to conduct an interview and then giving up halfway through and just letting them riff until commercial. That's like putting the two class clowns next to each other in school. A good idea for entertainment purpose, a bad idea if you want to accomplish anything.

Point? I'm just thinking that comedic actors -- especially those in supporting roles -- are trying to make sure as many of their scenes don't get cut as possible. (I guess that goes for supporting roles in general.)

I'd like to commend you for saying "couldn't care less" instead of the ever popular "could care less"
reggie [email] said at 5:07 PM 08-29-2007:
Thank you! "I could care less" doesn't even make sense. If you're trying to indicate a lack of caring about something then you want to remove all possibility that you might care about that thing, therefore I could not care any less than I do right now.

I checked out this video, was impressed, then subsequently bought the album, and am further impressed. Thanks for turning me on to some new sounds, Reggie!

The one thing I don't get -- and in the interviews I've seen the band refuses to explain -- is why the drummer has the cymbal so durn high.

I like Battles OK... I checked 'em out a few years back because Ian from Don Cab and the guy from Lynx were in the band. I'd honestly prefer it if Lynx and Don Cab (the REAL Don Cab, not Che's buncha pretenders) were still together, though.

Well the same guy who recorded much of the Clap your hands album recorded these guys. He also did the Chinese Stars stuff too. A fellow in Rhode Island named Keith Souza runs the studio, now named machines with magnets. They are on myspace.

Really? Which album? Their first, second (or both?)

I have not heard Chinese Stars...name sounds familiar though.

Keith Souza recorded portions of the first clap your hands album. Particularly, Tracks 2, 3, 5, and 10-12. They did their second album with someone else. Chinese Stars is a bunch of Providence, RI scene vets including the arab on radar frontman (A lower energy more psycho version of Ian Svenonious) and I think some guys from Six Finger Satellite. They're Ok. Keith recorded some lightening Bolt too I think. Anyway, the studio is a cool art gallery and recording studio. machineswithmagnets dot com

I remembered much later on in the day that CYHSY recorded with the producer of the Flaming Lips whose name is escaping me and I don't feel like Googling.

Not really my thing (not that you care or anything).
