 | Bendependent [email] said at 11:47 PM 06-27-2006: Naw, it should go in the "Crush on Carrie" section... |
 | reggie [email] said at 6:25 AM 06-28-2006: Wow, my crush on Mary Timony pales in comparison... |
 | kara [email] said at 9:26 AM 06-28-2006: zzz this band sucked so bad |
 | reggie [email] said at 3:27 PM 06-28-2006: If by "sucked" you mean "rocked harder than pretty much most other guys with guitars" then yes you are right.
Otherwise, I must smite you with a big fat slice of bacon for your insolence. |
 | abby [email] said at 3:31 PM 06-28-2006: they had some alright songs, but only the fun ones. overall i think they were too 90s girl emotional, and it could be mebarrassing sometimes. corin tucker seems to have a nice sense of personal style these days.
but this seemed like a long time coming, and i would've sworn it happened already! |
 | kara [email] said at 3:45 PM 06-28-2006: go ahead and smite me, there was nothing rocking about this horrible band with awful vocals..
I'm sure they rock harder than like.. all the other crap that people who like them listen to, like brite eyes |
 | myriam [email] said at 3:49 PM 06-28-2006: phew, thank you for saying it, i was trying to figure out why it should matter that this band broke up |
 | craig [email] said at 3:52 PM 06-28-2006: I was going to mention how awful the vocals were. This bad was like so many other mediocre bands of their day. |
 | myriam [email] said at 3:53 PM 06-28-2006: it always annoyed me that the only reason people would rock to them so hard is because they're chicks. if the same band were a bunch of dudes no one would listen to them twice. |
 | abby [email] said at 3:58 PM 06-28-2006: well, that is true, i do hate man-goat vocals (jello biafra, shit, even elvis), but sometimes one of the other girls would sing a little and that sounded cool.
they did a perfectly spot-on cover of "rock lobster" |
 | craig [email] said at 4:01 PM 06-28-2006: Does that mean you hate Danzig? |
 | abby [email] said at 4:04 PM 06-28-2006: kindof yeah. i mean, yes. |
 | brandon [email] said at 3:50 PM 06-28-2006: Sadness. Though it's better to break up than to become Pearl Jam. |
 | craig [email] said at 4:02 PM 06-28-2006: I had a roommate who listened to Sleater-Kinney non-stop at a very loud volume when I still lived in NYC. I wanted to flay him alive and eat his entrails. |
 | reggie [email] said at 4:03 PM 06-28-2006: I discovered Sleater-Kinney almost by accident. They were supposed to tour with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs back when the YYY's were just starting off. At that time, I didn't care one way or the other for S-K as I was only there to see the YYY's. Unfortunately Karen O got sick and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs couldn't make the show (I don't remember if they backed out of the whole tour or not) so it was just S-K and whomever the opening band was. I remember walking away thoroughly surprised at how freaking good Sleater-Kinney was.
I have no problem with their vocals. I couldn't possibly care less if the ladies were a "girl" band or not. I just know I liked what I heard a lot.
Then last year what turns out to be their final album The Woods came out and I was blown even further away. It was harder and louder than anything they'd done before and, for lack of a better word, ballsier than anything most other current bands were doing right now.
So consider yourself, uhm, smited? Smote? Smoten? Whatever the past tense of "smite" is. |
 | reggie [email] said at 4:09 PM 06-28-2006: I looked it up. It's both "smote" and "smitten." |
 | myriam [email] said at 4:28 PM 06-28-2006: This is really pretty sweet! Even though I don't like the band.
Also, it is smote if you are the protagonist; smitten if you are the antagonist. Can't think of the grammatical terms for those two conditions. I smote Sleater-Kinney; I was smitten by Sleater-Kinney. |
 | reggie [email] said at 6:01 PM 06-28-2006: Thank you, my dear, for the clarification! I am smitten by your ability to correct any grammatical errors we may smote upon Killoggs.
Okay, that's pushing it. |
 | josh [email] said at 4:10 PM 06-28-2006: they were around like 6 years or so before bright eyes.
their first album was a noisy, relatively punkish album that was only like 20 minutes long. it got lumped in with riot girl, but wasn't intended to be a part of that scene (and i like a lot of those bands, esp. bikini kill and bratmobile). both of the main members had been in bands that were also considered riot girl, heavens to betsy (whose only album is really quite good) and excuse 17 (who had a few good songs but were hampered by the lack of musicianship and singing ability of most of the members), and they intended his band to be more of a rock band.
their next two albums were good indie rock albums with some interesting things going on - complex guitar parts, multiple vocal tracks going at the same time with different lyrics, one singer with a high pitched voice, one singer with a low pitched voice so you could hear both vocal tracks even though they were singing over each other - something i thought was pretty cool when it worked. that was the best part of their sound. they also managed to make several catchy songs such as that joey ramone one.
however, their 4th & 5th albums pretty much sounded (to me, anyway) like their 3rd one so i lost interest in the band. after that i lost touch with however many more albums they put out. i know that suppossedly their newest(?) album was intended to sound like a 70s hard rock album, but i can't imagine how that would sound. i downloaded it but i don't think i ever checked it out.
all in all, no reason for them not to break up. when bands start to feel bored, why not call it quits? i can think of quite a few bands who have stuck around too long...
as far as the vocals go, i like carrie brownstein vocals but she doesn't have much range... corin tucker's are too high pitched. the songs worked best when they both sang together, but they seemed to do this less and less after the 2nd/3rd albums. possibly because brownstein settled more into being a 'lead guitarist' sort of role. |
 | reggie [email] said at 4:12 PM 06-28-2006: There's a lot more sharing of vocals on the last album. Or at least more splitting of the vocal duties. |
 | josh [email] said at 4:14 PM 06-28-2006: i'll listen to it eventually, i'm sure. |
 | reggie [email] said at 4:13 PM 06-28-2006: And it's good to get some back up on this. |
 | kara [email] said at 4:38 PM 06-28-2006: ugh I owned that first record, it was the absolute worst
and about bright eyes... doi, I was just saying that people who like S-K tend to like a lot of sucky music! |
 | josh [email] said at 4:50 PM 06-28-2006: yeah the first album wasn't that great. had 1-2 good songs though. one of the first 10" records i owned. i got it because it was a 10" and was listed as people from heavens to betsy... ah the days when people would buy music blind because they had been in other bands.... ah, the days when people would buy music... |
 | andrew [email] said at 11:06 PM 06-28-2006: w/o s-k, we might not have met, dude. |
 | mike [email] said at 3:46 PM 07-01-2006: Ive been listening to In The Woods lateley and tracks 3-5 seem to catch my ear. They are more what seems to get my attention, melodic and catchy, with breaks of dischord. It's alright. |
 | abby [email] said at 4:21 PM 06-28-2006: i think i'm going to download some sleater kinney right now, try to find those songs i liked. |
 | abby [email] said at 5:23 PM 06-28-2006: they wrote a song about 9/11 lol |
 | brandonA [email] said at 5:32 PM 06-28-2006: ha ha - i went and found it - and the lyrics are even worse than I'd imagined:
7:30 am nurse the baby on the couch
then the phone rings
"Turn on the T.V."
watch the world explode in flames
and don't leave the house
And the sky overhead
is silent, waiting
Clear blue holds its breath
And the heart is hit
in a city far away
but it feels so close
Don't breathe the air today
Don't speak of why you're afraid
(Standing here on a one way road
and I fall down,
no other direction for this to go
so we fall down)
WHY CAN'T I GET ALONG WITH YOU?
And the president hides
while working men rush in
To give their lives
I look to the sky
and ask it not to rain
On my family tonight
-s-k, "far away" |
 | abby [email] said at 6:13 PM 06-28-2006: watch the world explode in flames! i downloaded this. |
 | kate [email] said at 7:08 PM 06-28-2006: I have nothing but respect for Sleater-Kinney, and man they are each individually so awesome! I do love them as a band, and seeing them live was great too. I like their style, and I will be interested to see where they go with their indiv. projects such as quasi, etc. janet kicks ass. |
 | carla [email] said at 8:21 PM 06-28-2006: wow..
must be a time for crucial break ups.
i always cared greatly for sleater kinney, so i guess i'll cry for them too now. |
 | reggie [email] said at 8:23 PM 06-28-2006: It is a time for change it appears. |
