 | myriam [email] said at 3:08 PM 04-04-2005: I decided not to say anything before, but something I read again recently made me not want to keep quiet:
The reason I personally have not joined the ACLU, and probably will not for awhile, is that they make some seriously questionable (and sometimes frankly very bad) decisions in their rush to champion "civil liberties." Sometimes their definition of civil liberties itself is questionable and sometimes, in their haste to get up in arms, they seem to overlook key information that really should influence their decision-making. One of their actions in Rwanda, for example, was instrumental in allowing goverment propaganda to very readily reach the masses and incite genocide. While, obviously, genocide could have occured without the accidental help of the ACLU, and probably would have, it's yet another example of poor research on the organization's part that resulted in further harm to innocent civilians (whose civil liberties were in much greater danger than one jailed false journalist). Anyway if you want more information you can email me, but anyone interested in sending the ACLU money should seriously, SERIOUSLY research their stances and their historical actions.
I feel that until they begin to exercise greater caution, it would be best to do your research yourself and instead donate judiciously to causes you can verify as helpful to the greater good. |
 | kara [email] said at 3:15 PM 04-04-2005: There is not a single organization that I find to be 100% worthy of my time and/or money.
Due to a few recent events and recent ACLU initiatives, I felt compelled. I am not a very political person. I am mostly concerned with matters that affect me personally.
Needless to say, there is no single organization or person with whom I agree on everything. |

Well put. That's very close to my stance. |
 | myriam [email] said at 3:26 PM 04-04-2005: I understand, and I agree. I thought the comment needed to be made for those who didn't necessarily realize that that was the case.
Also, I suppose I am simply more cautious, or a bigger worrywort; I would rather contribute to specific causes I've researched than trust an organization that may unjustly use my money. You know, different strokes. I'm glad you're both conscientious members. |
 | milky [email] said at 3:36 PM 04-04-2005: Well, you know, I have Constitutional rights, rights that are not to be taken away from me or diminished.
No political party is going to guarantee to fight for those rights...they want "compromise."
Fuck compromise, I want a group that'll do even stupid things in the slim chance it'll protect my freedoms. And because I don't have the balls to do it, I'll give money to some group that does. |

I don't know about this, man.
However, as a member of said organization, you have the option to contribute input on the actions they make. |

This is a good point. |
 | milky [email] said at 4:54 PM 04-04-2005: My input would be to not contribute. No ACLU meetings in my neck of the woods. I could write or e-mail. |
 | myriam [email] said at 3:44 PM 04-04-2005: What about the actions the ACLU takes that don't impact you at all, but muck around in other countries? They may or may not be helpful, but you can't really say that they have anything to do with your freedoms in America. |
 | milky [email] said at 4:53 PM 04-04-2005: I only really care about the "A" part of the ACLU. |
 | kara [email] said at 3:38 PM 04-04-2005: I think it goes without saying that when you see information encouraging you to contrinute to an organization, that you should do some research before making the decision to do so. |
 | myriam [email] said at 3:47 PM 04-04-2005: I wish this were always the case.
I figure, the more information, the better. I have been sort of depressed by the unthinking, reactionary populace lately. Including the supposedly informed 'elite.' |
 | ed [email] said at 5:03 PM 04-04-2005: I haven't done in-depth research enough to be able to say I agree with everything these folk have done and are trying to do, but they're pretty darned close, for sure. |
