Dating Online

question for everyone:

I have this friend who is not meeting the kind of ladies he wants to be meeting. One reason for this is he's a bar regular, and as he keeps getting older, the girls that go there keep getting younger, or older and more alcoholic. he's trying to expand his social circle beyond bars and his job. he's in some martial arts class but it's primarily male.

I suggested online dating.

I used the personals on nerve.com (which are the same personals as onion.com and also salon.com) and I also have used match.com. I stopped using them about 3 years ago. I know people get really freaked out about online dating and recoil in horror if anyone brings it up, but I have actually had a good bit of luck through the personals and met some incredibly interesting people I would not have met otherwise. bars and friends can be very limiting social groups when it comes to dating, and for really shy and socially anxious people, online dating can be a much more comfortable way in which to meet people. Anyway, I've been outside of the online dating scene for over 3 years, but i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for this guy--you know, maybe a site that you had some luck with, etc. I realize this may be private to a lot of people and so if you want to keep your privacy, just email me (dorkygrrl@hotmail.com). I'm good with keeping my mouth shut about stuff so there won't be any gossip or conversations in the girl's club, etc.

SO WEIRD! I posted something like this, well sorta, about a girl I know in teh GC and on Myspace like... an hour ago.

Speaking of myspace... maybe he should try myspace/friendster as a compromise if he feels weird about an actual online dating service. He could get his feet wet, so to speak.

yeah, friendster can be a place to meet people (actually, someone cotacted me through friendster recently who i start dating). I haven't heard of myspace but i have heard of orket (orkut?). some people get really freaked out by people they don't really know who constact them through friendster. it can look kinda skeezy...like they're trolling. would be be weirded out by that? people get weirded out by things i would never even think of....

i think friendster has a gallery thingee taht you can add yourself too for dating specifically?

i have girls hitting on me fairly often via myspace... so i mean, people use it for that for sure.

I met my current girlfriend on the Nerve/Onion/SF Gate one, we've been going out about 7 months. So I'd definitely recommend that service.

hm....i'm starting to think that most people our age have had luck on the nerve/salon/onion one. i dated a guy from portland for about 9 months through that dating service.

i met my last girlfriend on theonion/nerve. the number one thing you should do when going on a date with someone you met online is meet up in a public place. but that may just be common sense.

meeting people online is rad. i have made some great friends that way. and dated some cool people as well. though i have also met some not so cool people, who come across a certain way online and then are very different in person.

I met my fiance through my webcam on stileproject.com, years ago.

Nowadays, all of the happiest couples I know met on message boards for whatever mutual interest: movies, games, etc.
