Glass war mosaic from the punchbowl crater

The most prevalent birds were myna birds - these are northern cardinals

basically, they don't have bugs, because the birds eat them, and the birds are not eaten because snakes are illegal

Also, Mongooses (sic) were all over Maui and were the stealthiest things I've seen - basically, when they run, nothing moves but their legs, like hanna-barbera cartoons

Are you planning on posting a longer update? I'm going to Maui in April and might have some questions.
nathan [email] said at 5:14 PM 03-27-2007:
we drove the hana hwy on the east side from paia to hana - it's stunning

but starts to look like this after awhile, so you should stop every couple miles and walk around

if you get the Wizard guidebook to Maui you can find secret places like the Venus pool:

or you can go the 7 sacred pools, where everyone is swimming:
my favorite was the black volcanic beach in Hana

Did you go out and back in one day, overnight in Hana or take the circle route around the south?
nathan [email] said at 10:51 PM 03-27-2007:
we went P to H the first day and then H to P the second day - we spent much more time in Oahu, which had great snorkling & surfing and so on

Did you guys go swimming on the North Shore at all? I swam through the biggest waves I've ever encountered there.

well, you know the entire perimiter is public (except for military)
so, we started out at the NE corner, and walked around a resort:

          and found this coral beach:

And we ended up in Laie, a great town, that had these guys dancing around:

I'm glad you guys found the Hana Highway. That was one of the most beautiful drives I've ever taken.

I can't wait to go to Hawaii. It is like my dream, even though I'm sure there are much more exotic places in the world. My other dream is to go to the Isle of Reunion. Someday!
nathan [email] said at 1:10 PM 03-30-2007:
it can get pretty exotic, maybe not as much as Mali

Iceland (furry ponies, geysirs, and volcanos), Tristan da Cunha (most remote island on Earth), Easter Island, and of course, Hawai'i

nathan [email] said at 1:06 PM 03-30-2007:

Wow, what a trip! I'll be compiling photos this weekend, I'll post a few here. Also, those birds in your post are called red crested cardinals. I saw those as well as northerns on Maui.
