Mod chipped Xbox is another good, cheap way to go, but it takes some work.

The soldering, if you have to do it (I did), is kind of tricky.

I broke my white DS and had to buy a new black one last weekend.

It retails for $69.99 at circuit city and has HDMI, has an upconverter via HDMI and most importantly it's PAL to NTSC conversion is quite good AND it can be made region free via an easy remote control code input found at: videohelp.com.
However, the unit I can whole heartedly recommend is the OPPO Digital 971 http://www.oppodigital.com/opdv971h.html
The OPPO was what I used up till last year and it was the best dvd player I have ever owned. Plus, what is great about OPPO is that they have been actually listening to their consumers and have made MAJOR improvements to their player via firmware updates, which have, of course, been free for any OPPO owners. I have never seen any other company go to the lengths that OPPO has to improve their product directly based on their consumer feedback. Pretty much it would be the last dvd player you would ever need to buy.
If you want to be real cheap and you have a laptop or computer with a video out, you can make your drive region free with dvd region free/lite http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free-lite.htm
It's only $24 bucks and works on 99% of the drives for any computer out there. I have it installed on my main computer and laptop. I used it to watch the French Version of Flash Gordon as it is far superior to the crappy original American "walmart" release.
josh [email] said at 4:17 PM 10-11-2006: again, it depends if he has HDTV or not. the DVP 642 is the best one i have seen, in it's price range, for standard TV users. if he is an HDTV owner, def go for an upscaling model.
