Hey party people. I want to know (as a socialogical experment) "How much work do you guys do in an average day?" Seriously. I'll start-I'm at work for 10 hours a day (I include my lunch hour as an hour of work). But I probably only get 2 to 3 hours of real work done. I have an office job, so its real easy to fuck off. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying I fuck off everyday. Somedays I really bust ass and put in "my honest day's work for my honest day's pay," but on an average day.....
brianbibbly [email] said at 11:42 AM 11-21-2003: It varies by day for me. 10 to 12 hours is the norm. But I bill in .1 increments, and I have to bill at least 10 hours a day, so when I screw around it's hell to pay.
neal [email] said at 11:48 AM 11-21-2003: Do you work on a plantation or something? Is it the overseer that gives you hell? And .1 increments? What's that about?
brianbibbly [email] said at 2:19 PM 11-21-2003: I'm an attorney. We have what is called 'billable hours.' We have to keep track of the time we spend on a particular matter and log them. The smallest unit of time I use is .1, or 6 minutes.
myriam said at 3:12 PM 11-22-2003: This must be really frustrating for you to keep track of, but for me it's reassuring to hear that law firms are that meticulous in their billing. Helps combat the worry that lawyers are just out to make money off their clients!
We bill in 30 min. increments, which is unusual for an arch. firm I think. The other ones I've worked at were 15 mins. This firm, however, is much more scrupulous about billing methods and honest reporting of billable hours, so that's good... I guess the higher your per-hour fee is, the smaller your billable unit of time must be!
Michael said at 7:55 PM 11-23-2003: I'm an expert at TimeSlips software, recording billable hours for attorneys, I worked at law firms thru college. I used to deciper code written by attorneys like "lm f/ cl" (left message for client" that billed at 6 minutes x $500/hour. It was amazing how tightly those guys billed for time, especially considering how much time they dicked around.
Randy [ url ] said at 11:52 AM 11-21-2003: I put in 8 hour days (9 if you count lunch), but I only do about 1 or 2 hours worth of work per day. Sometimes more. Sometimes less. I've had whole days go by where I literally don't do any work.
So that explains my frequent visits to Killoggs. Nothing else to do!
angelel said at 12:09 PM 11-21-2003: It really depends on which job. At my therapist job, I'm working all 3 to 5 hours. In my Pre-school teacher job I work the full 4 hours. At Visions, depending on the day, managing takes up about 3-4 hours of my time while I normally work a 6 hour shift.
anotherben.. said at 12:16 PM 11-21-2003: five times a week i end my life for 8 hours...i sell my soul.. and at the end of the day it is returned to me dirty and used and tired. .. regardless of how much i accomplish.. each moment of my 8hour trek from arrival to departure is a torturous chore.
kiche [email] said at 12:28 PM 11-21-2003: i spend 8 hours at my job (including lunch). i probably work for 4 to 5 hours. any less than that and i'd fall behind.
loren [email] said at 12:38 PM 11-21-2003: I'm an animator... i work at a game company. The 8 to 9 hour day we put in is broken down something like this:
9-11:30 or so - read emails and catch up on websites.
noon-1:30 or 2 - skate park Tues. and Thurs. lunch the other days.
2-3 - post lunch web viewing hour.
3-5:30 - do a little animation.
5:30-6:30 - play MOHAAB or Call of Duty multiplayer
go home.
loren [email] said at 12:39 PM 11-21-2003: unless we're in crunch, at which point it's 10 hours of animating straight to catch up for all the fucking around we've done.
neal [email] said at 12:48 PM 11-21-2003: Yeah, I'm a video editor. I work for satan. I pretty much follow the same schedual you do, minus the skate park activities. And when we're in a crunch, it's work 12 to 14 hours a day, plus weekends and shit.
I think that's why I fuck off so much when I can. You get burnt out working all those hours, man.
Or maybe I'm just a slacker and I'm trying to justify my unproductive hours. Hey Neal, you want some cheese with that whine.
shelly [email] said at 2:23 PM 11-21-2003: i am at work for about 10 hours per day. that includes lunch, but i usually work through most of that too. a large percentage of my job requires being here (phones, doors, answering general information and panicked questions) though it isn't always that i'm busy, i still can't leave. i usually only get paid for 40 hours though i'm always here more than that. the parts of my job beyond having a physical presence at my desk could be completed in 20-30 hours per week most weeks. so 4-6 hours per day. i'd probably be motivated to work faster if i could leave when i'm done.
neal [email] said at 3:01 PM 11-21-2003: Yeah, I totally agree with you. If I could leave work after all my work is done, I'd be so much more productive. But when your forced to stay until a certain time, it kinda kills your spirit.
ed [email] said at 2:33 PM 11-21-2003: I probably work 3-4 hours out of my 8-hour day. I'm also technically "on call" 24/7, but I have yet to encounter any odd-hours issues.
neal [email] said at 3:48 PM 11-21-2003: You know what's wierd? (besides Michael Jackson). I use to work much, much harder when I had shit jobs for a lot less pay. I worked jobs like video store clerk and coffee shop servent and had to work every single minute of my 8 hour shifts. Now, I can fuck off half my day and still get paid! Sure, I have different problems with a corporate job, #1 being stress, but as far as physical labor goes, I really don't work that hard for the money. Not as hard as Donna Summers anyway.
john said at 4:37 PM 11-21-2003: I'm telling you Neal, put those video editing skills to work in the pornography industry, and then you'll truly be "fuckin off" at work. Ha ha ha! Oh man, I kill myself sometimes!
Randy [ url ] said at 4:38 PM 11-21-2003: After having worked in an office job where I fuck off most of the time for about a year now, I can honestly say I miss the days of those shitty, low-paying retail type jobs. My days went by much faster, and I had much less stress. Sure, I make more money now, but I still feel as broke as I ever was.
Actually, what I really miss is delivering pizza. That was the best job I ever had, and I always had tons of cash. If only my car could withstand the stress. If only...
courtney [email] said at 1:47 AM 11-22-2003: I was just thinking that. I just started a new job that is very customer-service oriented, a lot different than my cushy office jobs that I worked for the past 6 years... it's been hard getting back into the grunt work for 8 hours, but the day totally flies by, and I work my ass off. And I noticed that I sleep really really hard these days as a result.
The more money you make, the less work you do... it seems so true.
myriam said at 9:27 PM 11-21-2003: almost 8. probably about 7, all told. everyone in the office can see my computer screen. hence my relative absence from killoggs lately.
Michael said at 10:32 PM 11-21-2003: Totally. I was on Killoggs all the time with my old job and probably got like 2-3 hours of work a day done, because there really wasn't any work to do. Now with my new job, and my screen facing out of my cubicle (can't believe I f-ing work in a cubicle now) to the powers that be, my work time is about 9+ hours a day and my internet time is about zero. I think this is my first response on Killoggs in like a week. Except for the 5 preceding this one, of course.
Courtenay said at 10:10 AM 11-22-2003: I work as a computer tech for a software company and spend my days being pulled many ways at once. The best part of the job is teaching, researching and writing documentation. I also get access to very interesting training which can make the other more difficult areas of the job worth it.
Daniel said at 11:37 AM 11-22-2003: i used to work about 1 hour for every 10 at a computer job. i quit that to be a messenger, now i work 9 hours straight five days a week for minimal pay.
josh [email] said at 5:28 PM 11-22-2003: It depends. The past week I worked a lot because we had deadlines... But if there isn't much going on then it's a lot less, sometimes not even 2 hours of work. BUT - I _always_ have meetings. So I'm going to meetings even when I'm not doing work... I don't count meetings as work, though I wish I didn't have to go to them.
AnotherGeoff said at 5:29 PM 11-22-2003: My present job commands that I work a whole 20 hours a week. I usually spend 4 hours working in the Writing Center and the rest goes to habitual domino games and general bullshit.
When I worked as a RA the last two years I pretty much worked every day without pay. I spent many nights working at 3 am due to the cops being called, unlocking doors, fixing shower problems, etc. I earned about half the pay (350/mnth) for 5 times the amount of work.
amanda [email] said at 1:50 AM 11-24-2003: I average about 6 hours a day, due to having 2 part-time jobs. Somedays I work a 12 hour day, and my only break is driving from one job to the other. Sometimes, I only work 4 hours a day.
I'd say that, at my one main job, I work far more hours than I am actually at work. This has something to do with my suddenly being solely responsible for all digital work. Previously, one of my bosses was to share the duties, but she got too stressed out and sort of stopped coming in to work. Now it's just me, and I might put in 8.5 hours without a break/getting to eat, constantly doing 2-3 tasks (digital retouch/reprints/artwork, helping customers, taking phone calls, taking care of the one-hour photo stuff...). I almost NEVER get to screw off and play on Killoggs or do crossword puzzles. I get woken up by early phone calls on my days off, and I make a startling EIGHT DOLLARS AN HOUR.
I really need to get a new job. Actually, it's not a choice, since the aforementioned business is going out of business after Xmas.
