I find that there's not one, but MANY people who remember "Jem."
Now, I never owned a Jem doll, because I was often too shy to ask for things I wanted as a child. I had Dawn dolls, which were also pretty darn cool.
But nothing really compares to Jem, the Holograms, and the Misfits.
Lisa T. said at 1:30 PM 01-14-2003: omg -- i absolutely _loved_ jem when i was a kid!!! jem & the holograms totally rocked!!!! i had a jem doll, and the stage that went along with it. if i remember correctly, you could hook the stage up to your "boom box" and jem would dance along with the music -- i think they even included tapes of jem & the holograms with the dolls and/or the stage. what a fabulous webring to know about. thanks kara!
shelly [email] said at 2:01 PM 01-14-2003: jem! jem is truly outrageous! truly truly truly outrageous! jem is my name. no one lese is the same. jem is my name! (jem!)
we are the misfits, our songs are better. we are the misfits (the misfits) and we're gonna get her!
kara [email] said at 11:31 AM 01-15-2003: Alright so it's official. I mentioned Jem to my friend Angie last night, just saying "Do you remember Jem?" and she said "yeah I just bought some videos off ebay!"
So we're starting the Jem cover band we're calling it JemStar.
Lisa T. said at 1:19 PM 01-15-2003: oh, i'm so jealous!!! if you ever tour and get to new orleans, i would _love_ to join in a set!!!
emmaliegh, tallulah, what do you think? should we start up a jem cover band in n.o.??? maybe we could convince adam to be the drummer..... oh, and i bet chad could print us up some stickers and t-shirts.... woah, i'm getting waaaaaaayyyyy to excited about this....
kara [email] said at 1:25 PM 01-15-2003: Dont steal my thunder missy! You guys can be one of the other bands from that show. The Misfits perhaps.. or the other nice band?
Lisa T. said at 2:01 PM 01-16-2003: our misfits cover band would not be called "the misfits." duh. geesh, why do you always have to rain on my parade, kiche?? it's because you like that imaginary-boyfriend-stealing bitch better than me, isn't it???
Emmaliegh said at 2:49 PM 01-16-2003: the lemon heads did a really great version of that song...speaking of which, kiche, do you have my tape called "songs we loved and hated and sang along to" that my sister made me? its got great songs such as "skulls", "fuck your hair", and "I'll be there for you".
Emmaliegh said at 4:40 PM 01-16-2003: you sooo were lent it. I forgot which song it was you were interested in...and i'm not saying you still have it. I was just hoping. the only other person that I can think of who may have it is up in Oregon somewhere.
Emmaliegh said at 2:40 PM 01-16-2003: sorry but I'm already committed to an Elvis punk band. and w/ school and work and everything, I do not have time for another band.
sonny [email] said at 4:38 PM 01-15-2003: You can use my brotherinlaw's drumset and my bass and bassamp Josh's PA and I think you could get whoever plays guitar to split a guitar amp with Ben cause he's always talkin' bout evertually getting one and while I don't know where to get a Starp on keyboard for cheap I could modify one for you and Then we could work together to JEM-ify all the guitar key bass etc and we could replace the front of the kick drum with a Jem Drum head. And my Sewing machine is fixed and after I doing a little more work on the heavy metal quilt COSTUMES ******** and the basement is all done up for the first show and for your first song you could just hit play on a big pink boombox and move around all fake while a Jem tape plays.......Thank you for posting this I am sick today and you made me smile XOXO Sonny
sonny [email] said at 1:19 PM 01-16-2003: And if you had a show/theme party EVERYONE would have to wear members only jackets with dangly jewelry and tiger stripped tank tops or pink and sparkles truly outrageous!!!
milky [email] said at 2:29 PM 01-16-2003: those guys don't need anymore charity money.
(although people would actually see the Jem movie just for them. How many original members are left? Two? And they get to use the logo...*shrugs*)
kiche [email] said at 2:32 PM 01-16-2003: sure they need the charity money. and more people would probably see it just for them. they've only got rights to the name and the logo, danzig gets ALL the profits from their original releases.
plus it pisses danzig off when the misfits get any publicity.
Lisa T. said at 2:18 PM 01-14-2003: you are evil -- that game is absolutely addictive! now i'm not going to be getting any work done this afternoon....
jeff [email] said at 2:34 PM 01-14-2003: I openly admit to being a hardcore Jem fan. She, along with Tiffany, Kim Wilde, and (somewhat) Debbie Gibson were the idols behind my Teen Steam ("ya gotta let it out!"). Debbie Gibson's image was too much of a preppie daddy's girl. That was the kind of thing that made my tight-rolled jeans come undone and my side-spiked hair wilt.
meenk said at 7:51 PM 01-14-2003: For that reason, my Jem was always the Bull Dyke of my Barbie world. She'd fight my NKOTB dolls for Midge, and especially Spectra (my favourite 11" fashion doll").
milky [email] said at 1:53 PM 01-15-2003: Indy was taller than Barbie.
Too bad you and my sister would make a bad match. I really do. I'd rather she date someone else. But, ya know, she loves who she loves...even if I don't love the idea, I still love her.

Bendependent [email] said at 3:55 PM 04-07-2004: weird. it's odd that the army man video was brought up here. I was just watching all that stuff the other day. There's a ton of short film goodness that my brother and I made in high school that I hadn't watched in years. There's like 20 hours of it.
I still have the army video.
My favorite Jem memory was in college when I was in some sort of film appreciation class where we watched movies and then talked about them. It was really a lame excuse for a class (like most of the ones I took at LSU - but a very good class for drawing comics). I remember one day 80's cartoons came up in discussion and the teacher started talking about Jem and how she had all these special super hero powers and whatnot.
And I guess he was really factually wrong cos there was this guy in the back of the room who I had never heard speak before and he got all mad and said "Actually, Jem wasn't a super hero. She was a regular girl who used Synergy to turn into Jem and battle the Misfits."
I think that was the most information I ever learned in college at one time and probably the longest amount of time I kept focus on something that was happening in a class instead of what I was drawing.
