WHAT... THE... FUCK

I would normally post this to the news items, but... umm... it just has to be a post.

BTW: I am never sleeping on a greyhound bus again.

It is a very sad admission on my part, but I can honestly say that I have never gotten head on a bus.

:( :( :(
brandon [email] said at 3:16 PM 07-31-2008:
There's a clip on CNN with a passenger who described how the murderer cut off that other guy's head and then carried it around, brandishing it, freaks me out.
julie [email] said at 11:04 PM 07-31-2008:
This is unreal. Also, isn't it kind of difficult to hack off a human head?!? Jeeezus, what kind of knife was he using? I can't even imagine being a passenger on this bus of horror.
amanda [email] said at 12:31 AM 08-01-2008:
Probably a hunting knife. It's not easy to hack off a head in a single swipe but I don't think it's that hard to take the head off with a repeated sawing motion and a sharp knife.
myriam [email] said at 12:21 AM 08-01-2008:
The part that scares me the most is that apparently nobody tried to stop him from stabbing this poor sleeping kid -- they all ran headlong out of the bus. I can't blame 'em but it's kind of sad that not one person tried to pull him away or something.

    From another article:

"Everybody got off the bus. Me and a trucker that stopped and the Greyhound driver ran up to the door to maybe see if the guy was still alive or we could help or something like that," Caton said.

"And when we all got up, we saw that the guy was cutting off the guy's head. ... When he saw us, he came back to the front of the bus, told the driver to shut the door. He pressed the button and the door shut, but it didn't shut in time, and the guy was able to get his knife out and take a swipe at us," Caton said.
myriam [email] said at 4:45 PM 08-01-2008:
I mean it's scary that they got off the bus in the first place without stopping to do something about the guy stabbing someone right in the middle of them. It's not like busses are big areas with lots of space to get around something like that, some of them must have edge right past the activity! I mean, I don't expect there to be heroes in every batch of random greyhound passengers, but I just think it's kind of sad that they didn't think to turn around and see if they could help until they were already past the action, outside the bus, and enough time had elapsed that the attacker had managed to saw through the guy's spinal cord with a hunting knife.

Another weird thing is that apparently the stabbing started around 8:30pm, the cops arrived theoretically shortly thereafter, and they note that the incident ended at 1:30am or something. So, did they just kind of stand around watching the guy roam the bus with a bloody head for a few hours? It's just kind of weird, you would have expected more... swat team activity than that. Or something. Just seems unimaginably polite, on the whole. "Oh, we'll just let him keep mutilating the body until he runs out of steam and stops of his own accord...no need to get involved."
brandon [email] said at 5:05 PM 08-01-2008:
Given that there are still no pictures of the attacker, I'm not entirely convinced that this wasn't the work of a Wendigo.
julie [email] said at 6:58 PM 08-01-2008:
I guess the reality is that most crime scenes don't have a "Let's roll!" moment. They did say that most of the people on the bus were asleep when it happened, so maybe they only had time to be rudely awakened by screams, think to themselves "WTF" and run off the bus in half asleep confusion? Ugh, it's just awful no matter how you look at it.

What's the icing on the cake is that the murderer has been charged with only second degree murder.

From the blog "When things go dark"

Murder in the Second Degree Seems Like Bullshit in the First...

Today it was announced that Robert Pickton has been found guilty on six counts of second degree murder, in the deaths of six Vancouver women.

I won't go into all the gory details, but for the uninformed, or those who don't feel like opening Google in another tab, here's the quick sketch.

Pickton's basically a horrible, rancid hillbilly who would drive from his disgusting farm on the outskirts of Vancouver into the downtown East Side to pick up prostitutes. Over a period of years, he'd cart them back to PoCo for God knows what sort of torture before disposing of their remains either by feeding them to pigs or into a pork rendering machine. His looks (and MO for that matter) is not unlike that of an unburnt, scrawnier version of Freddy Krueger.

(He's accused of 20 more murders and suspected of a total of at least 49, but the trial that just ended was regarding 6 victims only.)

Anyhow, the part I don't understand is the jury's finding. That Second Degree murder part.

To explain my confusion, this is the definition of Second Degree murder:

Second degree murder is all murder which is not first degree murder.

OK, that's cute, Canadian Law Online.
Here's the definition of First Degree murder then:

First degree murder is a murder which is planned and deliberate...[or] in the furtherance of another serious criminal offence (kidnapping, robbery, harassment, etc.).

So Second degree murder would be unplanned, accidental murder.

I suppose, fundamentally, it may just be an issue of semantics, because either way he's in prison for a spell. In Canada the punishment for murder goes like this:

First degree murder - mandatory life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 25 years.
Second degree murder - mandatory life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 10-25 years.

So I suppose it's the implication that galls me. How can you perform six unplanned, accidental murders? One - I can see it. But after you dismember your second or third victim and turn the remains into breakfast links, doesn't a whiff of deja vu pass over you? When you climb into your van and begin the 30 kilometer trek into the most desperately impoverished 'hood in Canada to pick up girls - does not a whisper from the past carry to you on the breeze?

To me, what the jury is saying is that you can ritually abduct, torture and kill heaps of girls over the years, without particularly noticing or even meaning to, because you're not planning any of this ritualistic stuff. You just innocently pick up a prostitute and feed her drugs and start showing off your guns and cleavers and then you get a little excited and the whole thing just kind of snowballs...geez, you promised yourself it would be different this time!

Official notice. Please, someone more versed in the ways of the law: explain this one to me. If I am not made to understand quickly, by this time tomorrow I will be using crude and unvarnished terms to describe the ladies and gentleman of the jury and Canada's justice system as a whole...

The same thing happens in America, dude. It's not just Canada.

The Greyhound attacker didn't know the victim and did not plan to kill this victim in particular, so it's considered 2nd degree murder, it wasn't a cop, etc.

In Canada, murder is classified as either first or second degree.[31]

First degree murder is a murder which is (1) planned and deliberate, (2) contracted, (3) committed against an identified peace officer, (4) while committing or attempting to commit one of the following offences (hijacking an aircraft, sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated sexual assault, kidnapping and forcible confinement or hostage taking), (5) while committing criminal harassment, (6) committed during terrorist activity, (7) while using explosives in association with a criminal organization, or (while committing intimidation. [32]
Second degree murder is all murder which is not first degree murder.

"TORONTO, Ontario (AP) -- A police officer at the scene of a grisly beheading on a Canadian bus reported seeing the attacker hacking off pieces of the victim's body and eating them, according to a police tape leaked on the Internet Saturday."

I read this story the other day and was very surprised at how little coverage its gotten. McCain's Paris Hilton/Britney Spears ad got more attention...
