What I'm Not Spending Money On Lately

I'm trying this new thing where I take photos of items that I want to buy instead of buying them, at thrift stores and junk shops and antique stores. I used to just buy things that I thought looked cool... and this lead to a house crammed with crap. I'm trying to avoid that these days. Kind of like my short-lived plan for a "one in, one out" clothing acquisition policy, I guess.

So for various reasons (don't really need it, can't justify owning more of x, too expensive, no room, can't carry it home) these are just a few of the things I have coveted, captured, and released back into the wild recently. I hereby post them for posterity, my own sanity/ therapy, and in appreciation of all the cool shit in our nation's junk stores:

These items were spotted in Washington DC, Chatham VA, Philadelphia PA, and Richmond VA over the last few months.

yeah, I shoulda bought those creepy girls. The fabric was just a big piece of fabric... I couldn't figure out what to do with it, so in the end I left it in Richmond. Le Sigh. Curtains would've been good, or maybe a sundress.

this is a good plan. i now only buy games or things that can help me organize stuff
brad [email] said at 1:34 AM 06-22-2006:
whoa, i had a swivel chair almost exactly like that orange one, at the dirtfarm, only it was red and didn't have buttons sewn into the cushion
julie [email] said at 11:12 PM 06-22-2006:
Crazy! That dirtfarm had anything you could think of, I do declare. By the way Brad, I'm really digging your new long hair.

The pottery and the creepy girls would have definitely made me pause. But, good job staying away! This reminds me of my related policy: "taking pics of things from my childhood that I really do not need to keep cluttering up my house but I'm just nostalgic enough to never throw away". I got rid of half the stuff in my childhood room after duly photographing/videotaping it. All I need is the image and the memory, not the object. Good for you!

Thank you, I'm glad you can appreciate the cataloguing effort. I wish I had bought those creepy girls, though.
meredith [email] said at 11:21 PM 06-22-2006:
I read this thing recently about 'decluttering' your life. One of the steps was to go through your house with a garbage back and throw away 27 things and not to stop until you had thrown away 27. Then you were to get another bag and put in it 27 things you were supposed to give away. I was like, holy shit! Anyway, your post reminded me of that. For some reason.
julie [email] said at 11:28 PM 06-22-2006:
Wow. I could totally do that. I wonder though, why 27? Yeah, I should do that. I also have been trying this new thing where if someone comes over and really really admires some random thing of mine, I just give it to them. They say Queen Elizabeth I was an expert at this, at "admiring things into gifts" when she visited other heads of state and stuff. I mean, I won't just give away ANYthing, but if I can tell that they like it more than I do, then I will. Hm, I wonder what would happen if 27 of you came over and wanted things...

Wow, this post is really sad. I'm the only one responding to comments. I should know better than to post to the front page, eh hipsters?
