Be Careful What You Google For

So I'm going to a friend's birthday party next weekend, and the theme is Vintage Sunday School Picnic. It's gonna be great. Everyone is bringing their favorite classic picnic dish to share (bucket of KFC, jello salad, weiners, etc) and we're all encouraged to dress in vintage picnic wear. If any of you have seen my closet, you know this is the kind of event that my wardrobe has been waiting for. In fact, I actually got the perfect dress a few weeks ago at an estate sale. It looks just like this, but it's bright green 60s paisley, not bright green 60s floral:

I was trying to describe the dress in an email to Meredith yesterday, so naturally I did some googling, putting in different phrases like "mod dress," "shift dress," and "smock dress."

When I put in smock dress, I got directed to this website. Which I thought was strange enough, but then I looked closely at the picture on the main page:

WHAT THE FUCK!?!?! This is supposedly some kind of suicide-preventing safety smock. For... hippie mental patients? Brainwashed extras from a Star Trek movie? ...GANDALF and COURTNEY LOVE!?!

Are these those nutjobs who kidnapped Elizabeth Smart?

The internet is so weird.

Re: the safety garments, that looks suspiciously like a submission to that conceptual MOMA safety series that ran recently.

Wearing one of those would definitely be social suicide. At the same time, I think the chances of a car intentionally hitting the wearer would increase.

I'm not surprised that Gandalf would need a suicide smock. I mean it was no accident that he fell off of that cliff when he was fighting the Balrog(?) in the first "Rings" movie.

Hahahaa - People are weird. It doesn't look like those 'suicide' smocks would protect much against hangings
milky [email] said at 10:19 AM 04-30-2006:
yeah, but you can't hang yourself with them like you can with a hospital gown.

Just to clarify, I'm not really making fun of the smocks so much as I am making fun of the way those models look. Why did they have to mess their hair up? Why do they look like zombies?

I guess maybe they tried the photo shoot with some happy, pretty models and they just went, "Nah, this isn't working. Come on, let's bring in Caroline Rhea and ZZ Top."

I figured they were extras from the next film set in the post-apocalyptic future.
art [email] said at 6:07 PM 04-30-2006:
Perhaps they were the localc insane couple and they posed for cheap?

I'm still going to make fun of the smocks

ever been to a mental hospital?
julie [email] said at 10:37 PM 04-30-2006:
Well, uh, I've seen One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. And Girl, Interrupted. And Rain Man.

I think you're missing the point, though. I mean, in print ads for straitjackets, do they show them on a drooling, wild-eyed model? (Seriously. Do they??)
josh [email] said at 8:24 PM 04-30-2006:
hey how do you find out about estate sales? the paper?

also your dress looks awesome.
julie [email] said at 10:40 PM 04-30-2006:

Thanks! I'm psyched to wear the dress.

Estate sales: Online classified ads, in the Post and CP. I have a friend who is more studious about checking the listings than I am, I usually just tag along with her. Sometimes I go myself, if I'm bored and up early enough.

I need to stop, though, or else open up a room in my house as a junk store. I buy too much stuff, I don't like to see anything "cool" left behind. Maybe I don't need a set of 24 glass medicine/spice jar bottles with stoppers from the 60s, but dammit, if I don't take them, someone else will! *sigh*

This was on the FAQ page:

We used to call this a shift, usually, or for a time it was known as a sack dress, very middle 60's that term. I happened to have been there at the time. I'm talking about the green dress of course, not the suicide prevention smocks. Now back in the sixties smock-ing was popular for a while, that is a type of embroidery done of gathers of material, therefor you could have a smocked shift, perhaps.

Right! Thanks for clarifying. It took me quite a bit of googling to even figure out what these things are called. Lots of the ones on ebay are tagged with the descriptor, "Twiggy." Pretty funny! Also, I found a pattern for some online for little toddlers, made out of pillow cases! What a great idea.

Also, I suspect the one I have might be a maternity dress... the hemline in the front seems like it goes down a little, to accomodate the bulge. But I don't care, I'm still gonna wear it. I think with a dress like this, I'm MEANT to look like some twigs sticking out of a beanbag.

I have a headscarf that matches, and big white-framed Jackie-O sunglasses. I'm ready!
