"I'm so happy and you're so kind, You want more money - of course I don't mind, To buy nuclear textbooks for atomic crimes" - The Jam, 'Going Underground'
The fact that there are almost 10x times as many clubs posts as responses is disturbing.
I don't want the clubs to destroy the front page, but I will listen to any suggestions on how to have the clubs and not take away from the front page/main site.
The main site is what is important to me because I use it as a guage of what was going on in my life in the past... I regularly look back to see what was going on 2,3,4 years ago... if nothing is ever posted to the front, that aspect of the site will die for me.
So, yeah - the main page is my priority. Come up with solutions and I'll think about them... otherwise the experiment has come to an end.
jake [email] said at 4:34 PM 08-28-2004: twentythirdwhy: hey josh
In Dead Language: yyo
twentythirdwhy: the clubs are huge
In Dead Language: no more clubs
twentythirdwhy: it doesn't seem like all the posting there
twentythirdwhy: has taken much away from the front pages.
In Dead Language: There have been 1019 club posts in the past 24 hours.
There have been 163 responses in the last 24 hours.
twentythirdwhy: yeah,
twentythirdwhy: but like 900 of those posts were you, me,
twentythirdwhy: meredith and julie.
In Dead Language: thats fine, i don't want my db to be used as an IM replacement
twentythirdwhy: and all four of us are posting to the front pages plenty as well.
jake [email] said at 4:37 PM 08-28-2004: twentythirdwhy: and all four of us are posting to the front pages plenty as well.
twentythirdwhy: I agree.
In Dead Language: if people want to chat on aim, they should do that. if they want to post on a blog, they should do that
twentythirdwhy: okay,
twentythirdwhy: but for example,
twentythirdwhy: I'd never be talking with XXXXX about his XXXXXXXX (or mine) on IM or the weblog.
twentythirdwhy: I'd make a strong bet that if you take away the clubs counts
twentythirdwhy: the pace will slow down a whole lot.
jake [email] said at 4:41 PM 08-28-2004: twentythirdwhy: what was the logic for the LC/GC in the first place?
In Dead Language: there wasnt any
In Dead Language: ben just said "it'd be funny if we..."
twentythirdwhy: ah.
twentythirdwhy: so you're sure you're not just bitter about seeing the lead evaporate?
In Dead Language: i just think that if someone had the energy to post 329 times in the LC... i mean, thats how much front page commentary wasted?
josh [email] said at 4:47 PM 08-28-2004: same thing in the GC.... that murder discussion from yesterday was REALLY GOOD and should have been a front page post.
josh [email] said at 4:38 PM 08-28-2004: i decided to leave them open for a bit, but i added a scolding statement... and i will take them away for reals if we can't come to some sort of good proposal for what to do here.
I DO NOT WANT KILLOGGS TO BE A CHAT ROOM. THAT'S WHY I TURNED OFF THE OLD KILLOGGS CHAT ROOM.
The thing I like about Killoggs is the archivedness of it, and while I understand sometimes you want to talk "off the record", I don't want it to be 90% off the record and the official site usage to just be 10% of what goes on...
ed [email] said at 4:39 PM 08-28-2004: I am so not gonna post what I was about to post in the GC to the front page.
I feel your pain, but there's no way I'm gonna share the ultra-personal stuff where the general public can see it. People I know know about Killoggs, and I'm more wiling to share "sordid details" with y'all than I am with my in-laws.
ed [email] said at 4:43 PM 08-28-2004: Uhm, if you've been keeping up with the thread that "so and so" and I have been talking about in the GC, you'd know that it's not something I'm really comfortable sharing with vaginally-empowered members, either.
Not that it's THAT bad, ladies, but I'm more modest and more easily-embarrassed than most Killoggians.
josh [email] said at 4:47 PM 08-28-2004: Yeah, Jake pointed out to me that there really are used for the gender clubs, and I agree, so thats why i turned it back on... But i stil think the clubs are not set up right. There has to be a differentw ay to do it so it will help killoggs as a whole, not become the only reason for killoggs.
josh [email] said at 4:39 PM 08-28-2004: Jake convinced me that they serve a purpose, but I still want to figure out a way to make them work better with the MAIN SITE.
josh [email] said at 4:45 PM 08-28-2004: My take on it is that the energy that it took to post 1600+ clubs posts since yesterday morning could have led so some FUCKING AWESOME front page-ness.
I also think that many people tend to want to post their stuff as away from the front as they can get... When I first added journals, front page posts took a nose dive as people started simply posting entries.
I feel like a similar thing is happening with the clubs, with the ADDED issue that people are responding less, and instead talking about stuff in the clubs...
I dunno, maybe it's just me but it seems like there are lots of things in the clubs that I see that could be on the front/in journals.
jake [email] said at 4:47 PM 08-28-2004: In Dead Language: theres no way most of what goes on in the clubs shoudl really be in teh clubs
In Dead Language: site news is the exception since its killoggs coding talk
twentythirdwhy: yeah but some of what's in the clubs, like I said, wouldn't happen on the front page or IM.
In Dead Language: and really most of the gc talk from yesterday was stuff that was appropriate for site news
twentythirdwhy: almost all of it
twentythirdwhy: between you and me
In Dead Language: if the clubs kill the front page who cares if stuff goes on there thats not appropriate?
twentythirdwhy: huh?
twentythirdwhy: I just don't see the front page dying.
In Dead Language: if the clubs kill the front page who cares if stuff goes on in the clubs thats not appropriate for the front page?
In Dead Language: the front page has been shitty for awhile
twentythirdwhy: lots of responses to your candy post
twentythirdwhy: lots of responses to the olympics
twentythirdwhy: mattgoon's bloody shoe
In Dead Language: 67 is not a lot
In Dead Language: we used to have a 100+ every week
twentythirdwhy: yeah,
twentythirdwhy: but there's more front page posts these days
twentythirdwhy: it seems to me.
In Dead Language: the simple fact that there were like 1400 club post yesterday says that the clubs are being abused
twentythirdwhy: I'm not disagreeing with that.
twentythirdwhy: but I think part of it is the numbers game.
twentythirdwhy: between lc and gc.
In Dead Language: well broach that on the post and discussion will ensue
twentythirdwhy: that's why you TOLD me to post the site suggestions in the GC yesterday.
twentythirdwhy: alright, I'm posting this then.
In Dead Language: seriously our conversation yesterday was liek 100 posts
In Dead Language: there were like 1500 from yesterday morning til now
twentythirdwhy: about 250 between you and me
In Dead Language: yeah but a lot of the ones i posted were to XXXXX and XXXXX
twentythirdwhy: and 700 or so from two ladies
In Dead Language: maybe ill cap each club at 100 a day or something
twentythirdwhy: so I'm just saying, maybe it would suffice to tell a couple of us to cool it.
In Dead Language: that seems so artificial
twentythirdwhy: I agree.
In Dead Language: i added the "dont post here if it would be better on the front page"
In Dead Language: but that didnt help
twentythirdwhy: Dude, you added that yesterday.
twentythirdwhy: right?
In Dead Language: i added that weds
twentythirdwhy: oh.
twentythirdwhy: still.
In Dead Language: and clubs posts went up each day
twentythirdwhy: Also, you added the 24/48 yesterday, and I think that made a big difference.
In Dead Language: you think that made it go up?
twentythirdwhy: yes.
In Dead Language: why?
twentythirdwhy: It means you can post all you want without expiring older stuff.
In Dead Language: ahhhhh i didnt think about that
twentythirdwhy: That's what was holding me back from being super frivolous.
twentythirdwhy: you didn't think of that?
In Dead Language: no but i never really considered the fact that i was pushing stuff off when i posted
In Dead Language: i never read down the page, just the top
twentythirdwhy: not that I wasn't super frivolous to begin with.
In Dead Language: even when i miss shit
In Dead Language: maybe i could add something so that if a person has posted more than say 50 times to the clubs in a day the top has a big BOLD thing that says "YOUVE POSTED A LOT WHY NOT POST TO THE FRONT PAGE"
twentythirdwhy: I really think you could change the problem by:
twentythirdwhy: 1. taking away the counts
twentythirdwhy: 2. telling a couple of us to cool it.
twentythirdwhy: me included.
In Dead Language: well type up a suggestion and post it on my post
In Dead Language: everyone can talk about it there and what people want i guess i will probably do
twentythirdwhy: pretty benevolent for a dictator.
twentythirdwhy: dick.
anotherben [email] said at 6:00 PM 08-28-2004: it makes killoggs like a newspaper with too many jump pages. "story continued on c7" or e14 and g3. i dont find much time to read killoggs anymore now that i am no longer staring blankly at a computer screen 40 hours a week.. so when i do come to killoggs i find it too diffuse and smeared. "in the good old days" everything was right there on the front page. i could miss a few days and, if i felt so inclined, skim through and get up to speed on what bloody issue was being picked at to keep the blood flowing. now everything is so scattered throughout the site my limited attention span just assumes it would take too long and i just go read the news on google.
josh [email] said at 2:48 PM 08-29-2004: Everything is there in the DB; there's just no way to go back for the LC/GC/DS... if people wanted those clubs could be looked back on just like the site news , but the consensus was that people liked it expiring.
zack [email] said at 5:04 PM 08-28-2004: I like the clubs, but i agree that they have been especially harmful to the front page area.. I also didn't realize we had selectable journal post types... I'd say the only clubs we really need are the GC, LC, & site news, but only post stuff there that's relevant. I think the main thing going on in there is a lot of extraneous comments and threadrot that just doesn't need to happen. if you've got something worthy of the GC or site news, post it there but keep everything else up on the main pages.
josh [email] said at 7:20 PM 08-28-2004: The fact that people are obviously using the clubs to talk about whether or not the clubs should stay or not, instead of talking about it here... is exactly what I feel the problem is.
josh [email] said at 7:28 PM 08-28-2004: Don't think so? I think it is... Clubs are humming along, I'm getting IMs, lots of people have been online, but only a few people have chimed in on here: You, Me, Zack, Ed. ABen.
If people aren't gonna discuss stuff on Killoggs anymore, what's the point of having it?
brandon [email] said at 10:51 AM 08-29-2004: Get rid of the clubs. Beat the perversion back out of the bush and into the lanes.
I cannot tell you how many discussions are lost forever in the GC that I would like to go back to; or re-read; or explore the links therein. Plus, clubs are for fags.
