hey killoggs. i still read you sometimes between trips to russia and saturn. the rest of the time i read old books translated from spanish into english and back into spanish again. only parts of that are true.

what is true is that i joined a sailing team. so far we have been in two races. the first one was around vashon island from tacoma. it snowed a lot during that race. the second race was from tacoma to seattle and back. we are not very good, but turns out, there are not a whole lot of very good sailing teams that subject themselves to the conditions we race in for fun. if they are any good, i suspect they race in competitions with monetary rewards. probably in warmer climates. we have only lost one person overboard so far, and we actually did manage to get him back on the boat before he died of hypothermia. shortly before that happened, one of the team members learned that he gets really really seasick when the boat is headed into the wind. i was fortunate enough to be upwind of this person. all in all though, it is a pretty good time. the key is to get waterproof footwear. no matter how cold and wet and miserable you are, if your feet are warm and dry, you know in the back of your mind, things could be a lot worse.

I have toyed with the idea of trying to go sailing. I think if anything I just need to get invited along sometime to spark my interest. Although, I doubt I'd ever have enough time to really invest into it.

Is it awesome? Does it make you want to buy your own boat?

Sailing rules! If you have the opportunity to sail with someone, go.

I've really only ever sailed on small lakes or Lake Michigan/Superior, so I can't vouch for ocean sailing. However, if you have some lakes in the area you live and you're interested, it's definitely worth looking into some books from the library and a small boat. Before I moved, there was a used catamaran w/ trailer which I was considering that was selling for ~$1000.

My parents own a 34' Pacific Seacraft. We used to own a 15' West White Potter, which was a nice beginner boat in that it was very sturdy, had an adjustable keel and small cabin, and could seat 3-4 people without issue.

I really, REALLY miss boating out here in California. I didn't know that we'd wind up with a garage when we moved and probably would have tried to bring a small sailboat along or have my Porta-bote and a motor shipped if I had known we'd have the space. I live less than a mile from the SF Bay and don't get to enjoy it at all, as it's too polluted for swimming.

I have only gone sailing in the Gulf of Mexico which I imagine does not count as the high seas. I would like to sail in the extreme south seas, after visiting Tristan da Cunha.

yes anthony, it is awesome. someday i will live in louisiana again and i will have a sailboat and i will know my way around the Gulf. there is a nagging fear of drowning in a storm, but i suspect i will get over that. or maybe i will drown in a storm. if you hang about a marina (or check out the bulletin boards at one) it is apparently not very difficult at all to get invited along to crew for someone.

matt... i have been trying to track you down. email me.

I only went "sailing" once. It was delightful although I appeared to spend most of the time swimming around Lake Washington trying to get back on to the boat.

I've never been out in water deep enough that you couldn't still see shore but I always wanted to go on one of the long fishing trips in the Gulf.

It is good to hear from you.
anthony [email] said at 2:04 PM 02-28-2008:
Did you take lessons or just picked it up from friends and other sailing experiences.

I know they have informal races at one of the marinas here on Sundays in which you can get asked to crew just by standing around.

Nevertheless, it sounds like something fun to do. A guy at my work sails and one of my ex-girlfriend's Dads worked for Beneteau. That would also explain why she grew up on a sailboat for the first half of her life. French people are weird.

i got on a boat a couple of times in ny by hanging out at the marina. i took a class recently, but it didn't teach me much more than the names of all the parts of the boat. one of my bosses is big into racing, and sent out an email at work looking for crew, and that is how i come to be on the sailing team of a small engineering firm in tacoma.

swimming in lake washington sounds like a chilly experience. you seattleites need to come play in tacoma sometime.

      hey matt, email me.

I'd love to visit. We'll probably weekend that way sometime this summer. There are some gardens I want to hit and I still haven't made it to the museum of glass. The invitation is always reciprocal whenever you're feeling "metro natural."
anthony [email] said at 6:43 PM 03-03-2008:
Ah, yeah I need to find a small IT firm to work for that has a sailing team. Boats are expensive.
anotherben [email] said at 1:25 AM 02-29-2008:
also, when you get out on the boat as a beginner, you usually have just one job. a certain rope you have to pull or some other seemingly menial task. i am still in the menial task phase.
