Sound Isolating Earphones by Shure

E2c Sound Isolating Earphones by Shure, $109.00

"Originally developed for professional musicians, the E2c combines Dynamic MicroDriver speaker technology with a sound isolating design to deliver rich, full-range sound while blocking outside noise -- ideal for enhancing your listening experience with portable MP3, DVD, and CD players as well as all other audio sources."

http://www.shurestore.com/earphones/eseries_e2c.html#overview

I have wanted headphones like this for YEARS, and now here they are. Why am I hesitating to buy them? Do any of you have them yet, or own anything similar? There have been so many times where I hold my hands over my ears for the "good parts" of songs. I also have long gotten over the desire for keeping around a pair of good bulky sony headphones with the curly cord. I want minimal, in my ear, outside sound cancelling bliss! Especially for the airplane, and especially to make the bass in my music even more intense.

what do i have in my ears right now...oh sony. man, even if i cover my ears up, the bass isn't that great. but 100 bucks for a little pair of earphones, what if they break, get lost? i have like four pairs of these cheap earphones hanging around my room. i just pick them up and go. maybe that's just me. of course i would be super careful with these nice earphones, but tiny and expensive, i just hate that combination. i just imagine this hammer coming down...SMASH! or my shoe crunching down, and that's it. nobody's perfect.

i don't know, i'm suspicious about putting things in my ears. plus i think i look good wearing headphones. ipods are the hula hoops of tomorrow.

i'll agree that ipods are all trendy and stuff, but man, i love having mine. it's way handy at work when it's slow. i just slip it in my apron and put in my headphones and i'm good to go.

Always trust the advice of strangers.

I've tried the $300 Bose ear-covering ones on a jet and a turboprop and they are phenomenal. If I start travelling regularly again, I will surely buy those and never regret the cost.

the ipod buds are SO LAME. i have had two pairs and one side blew out on both after having them for only a couple of days. they just can't handle the rock and roll. man.

i'm on a quest for headphones that don't suck and aren't totally uncomfortable to wear (and good for wearing for running/working out), let us know if you get these and whatcha think.

Slate ran a couple pieces last year that compared different brands. Here is one.

I personally hate any "in-ear" solution. Just can't freekin' handle 'em.

So I have an iPod mini (which I adore) with a pair of "over the back of the head" headphones, which cover my ears, rather than penetrate them.
kate [email] said at 8:00 PM 07-27-2005:
i am quite astonished by folks' protesting to an in-ear headphone, or earphone rather. it doesn't bother me a bit. in fact i don't even feel them after a while. eeeenteresting!
ed [email] said at 9:02 PM 07-27-2005:
I dunno. Maybe it's just a personal issue, but those little "earbuds" at the end of the trendy white wire feel like jamming cannonballs into my ear canals. It freaks me out. I can cover my ears with any number of contraptions, from the old-skool 70's 20-lb headphones with the 1/8" jack to my current set of phones which are minimally heavy and go across the back (rather than the top) of my head...

But sticking things into my ears makes me uncomfortable on both a physical and a psychological level.

So, yeah. I have an iPod mini, which weighs like 3 ounces, and wear headphones from the 80s. I'm all kindsa wierd. But I can't handle putting stuff inside my ears. It's creepy.

I'm with you Ed. I don't like putting things in my ears. Not only is it just plain uncomfortable to me, but it's not very sanitary. I saw a guy on the bus pull one out of his ear once and it had ear wax all over it. No thanks.

you also spent years getting used to dorky, heavy radio headphones!
ed [email] said at 10:34 PM 07-27-2005:
mb so, but they never felt invasive.

How would you like a pap smear that didn't *intrude*? You'd LOVE it. Right?

Perhaps a ridiculous analogy, but I don't like *any*thing inside my ear canals, even q-tips.

the bother me as well, I'm just old school

on another note. i am making myself deaf right now, rocking out to a song while i make a fellow killogger a mix. i wonder if i had better earphones...would i not be tempted to crank the volume?

sometimes i just like to feel like my eyeballs are vibrating to the music. since my dad and brothers are drummers, i have just accepted the fact that we are all going to be deaf. "dad...dad...DAD!!!" "KATE, you scared me." (ha)
kate [email] said at 9:53 PM 07-27-2005:
not the song i am listening to, but a nice song to go deaf to, "Defcon" by Supersystem or an older trendy one, "House of Jealous Lovers" by The Rapture. It's exquisite to get the higher pitches while also having the bass going. Do not try this at home unless you are stupid like me. It's somehow pleasureable because I can feel endorphins all over...i have no idea why. No need to discuss.
myriam [email] said at 9:56 PM 07-27-2005:
      haha sounds good
kate [email] said at 9:57 PM 07-27-2005:
oh wait, you do have to dance a little when you hear these songs...HELL YES...I'll be quiet now.

      back to mixing.

      DEFCON!
      defcon goes one through five
      one through five
      so we can know
      when to run and hide!!

      ; )
