napoleon dynamite

i went to see this movie last night with a gang of like 40 15 year old kids expecting it to totally suck and be retarded but it didn't at all and instead it kinda ruled.

i can't really judge things too well while i'm at camp cos while I'm here I tend to love ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING, but yeah, i thought this movie was kind of amazing.

i have so many things to post about but there is no time....

more later...

I really wanna see this movie. I read about it months ago and then read a buncha negative reviews when it came out but I think it's just one of THOSE movies. One of those weird little movies that the general public won't like, critics won't like but anyone who considers him/herself the least bit different (i.e. all of us here at Killoggs) will love it.

GOTTA SEE IT!!!!

Right, the critics pan it for being mean. I laughed throughout the entire thing.

i saw this movie on sunday. it's been out for a while but there was still a long line to get in.

i knew it was going to be awesome from just the picture of him in the suit with the snow boots.

it's pretty far ffrom being mean spirited. it was one of the most warm hearted movies i've seen in a while.

yeaq, i've been tryin to make it to this...

I lurve this movie. It's flippin' sweet.
cecil [email] said at 3:00 PM 07-16-2004:
I didn't really like it. Maybe I was expecting more.

My problem is that I don't think this movie was about anything except characters. The characters were hilariously amusing but ultimately I didn't care about what happened to any of them, and nothing really happened anyway. It was like getting stoned. Everything is funny, but when it's over it amounts to a big waste of time.

Have you ever imagined that you could go to Sesame Street when the show wasn't being taped and you could just hang out with the muppets during their daily routine? Well I think the characters in Napoleon Dynamite are waiting around to be in a movie with something interesting to say, and in the mean time here's this movie where we just laugh at how odd they are in general.
myriam [email] said at 3:16 PM 07-16-2004:
as compared to Rushmore, perhaps? Where the characters are all pretty strong and quirky and at first you think it's just going to be a character piece and then suddenly it evolves into a ridiculous, complicated plot?
josh [email] said at 3:19 PM 07-16-2004:
      I love Rushmore so much.
cecil [email] said at 3:27 PM 07-16-2004:
      Yeah, acutally.

      Am I missing the point?

nope! just trying to clarify what you mean, for myself. haven't seen it yet, trying to get an idea of what it's going to be like so i won't be disappointed or whatever. i was expecting something more like rushmore, like it sounds like you were, mb.
cecil [email] said at 4:25 PM 07-16-2004:
I mean, it's definitely worth seeing. Maybe it's innovative in its simplicity. But yeah, I think Jared Hess is Wes Anderson Lite.
kara [email] said at 4:31 PM 07-16-2004:
i'm a fan of character developemnt

Thats ALL the royal tenenbaums was, while youre on the topic of that guys movies
cecil [email] said at 4:53 PM 07-16-2004:
I have so much to say about that point in relation to ND but I'm sure I'll ruin the movie for you if I do. go see it tonight!
yvonne [email] said at 5:38 PM 07-16-2004:
i laughed thru this entire movie, but it doesn't really have a plot. the entire movie is one big excuse for all the characters to be weird and adorably hilarious. but it doesn't compare to wes anderson AT ALL! after all, it's a freaking mtv movie...
nathan [email] said at 6:03 PM 07-16-2004:
Right, Wes Anderson's influences are Eustache and Truffaut. This movie is more influenced by Pee Wee's Playhouse and Solondz.
yvonne [email] said at 6:29 PM 07-16-2004:
I would have to say Todd Solondz is in a different category all together. his movies are hilarious but you almost feel guilty for finding them hilarious. either way, i want to be in the special people's club because of him.
cecil [email] said at 6:45 PM 07-16-2004:
True. It's MTV. It's good sketch comedy.

I haven't seen it, and I doubt it could be as good as Wes Anderson, but as for it being an MTV movie, so was Election. And that movie was excellent.

Ben, wait 'til you meet Jeremie... a buddy of mine here at work that is a grown up non fro version of Napolean Dynamite. It's really truly an amazing resemblance.

Anyone seen IROBOT? If you do, keep an eye out for the "Pimpbot" on the street scenes. It was a good movie, nothing great, or groundbreaking. ILM has not made much progress in the "HEY LETS MAKE EVERYTHING LOOK COOL, BUT REALLY FAKE AND CARTOONY LOOKING!" department. A.I., Minority Report, IRobot, and the upcoming Sky Captain, all look exactly the same...Fake. Oh, and I'll take Election over Rushmore anyday, and I'll take Better Off Dead over all of them! :)

Saw this last night. I was amused; a little put off that MTV was calling at least some of the shots; disappointed by the formulaic elements.

But whatever, it's got an ATV driving grandma, a llama, and the fan-fuckin tastic denouement. I strongly identified with the lead, but on account of my awkwardness and my propensity to lie for no reason.

Go see it during the day - but see it on the screen.
