Tech help, and a new plan

Here I go cross posting again:

Spent another day at Red Cross ACTUALLY HELPING people (mostly by subverting Red Cross rules) in the River Center Shelter in downtown Baton Rouge, the biggest in the state. But more on that at a later date, I've got a new mission in mind.

As I mentioned, I've been following what Joel Johnson and Jacob Appelbaum have been doing. They are part of the CU Wireless effort to get some networks up in affected areas and help people gain access to FEMA forms, missing people databases, and generally reconnect them to the world or connect them for the first time in many cases. Read their websites back a few days and see what I'm talking about, pretty awesome stuff. They are in Algiers right now, on the other side of the river from New Orleans, in an impoverished area and have setup a network with a Powerbook and an EVDO card. Awesome.

Here is the list they posted 3 days ago of supplies they need:

-Any more iSights and power books with pcmcia (each new one is a new streaming video of the city on 24×7)
-EVDO PCMCIA cards with Verizon service plans activated (This is our uplink)
-Laptops that have PCMCIA (one for wifi, one for EVDO) or laptops with an ethernet port and one PCMCIA
-Surge protectors and power strips
-Flat Panel monitors or monitors in general
-Solar panels
-Power inverters that can tap onto a car batteries

The important thing being laptops. I just spoke with Joel, and he said they need modernish laptops with PCMCIA slots and built in wireless more than anything. These aren't cheap... obviously. EVDO PCMCIA cards with service plans are a close second in need I think.

So if anyone has any access to these items and is willing to contribute or can talk a company into donating the equipment, it can and will be used in powerful ways to give those in need a voice and an uplink to aid. Since they are a part of CU Wireless, a non-profit, donations ARE tax deductible. Pass on the word if you know anyone who could help.

I'm contacting some of their people in Ponchatoula to see if I can help them out there until I can get a car for more than a few days and head to Algiers, if I'd be of any use to those guys. Joel seems like an awesome guy, and I'd love to be a part of what they are doing in any way.

Leads, donations, comments welcome!

More details on my day and how F'ed up Red Cross is:
Josh: this hsit you are doing sounds amazing man
Loren: i don't know what the hell is going on tomorrow... I'm going to Ponchatoula to meet these guys
Loren: no idea what i'll be doing
Loren: then maybe to Algiers, but dunno since I can't seem to get a car sorted
Josh: yeah man, thats intense
Josh: so what rules are you breaking for red cross
Loren: haha
Loren: every fucking one of them
Loren: I have a vest that is only supposed to be worn by the "pro" red cross guys, the national long term volunteers.
Josh: ill mention that to them to
Josh: ohhhh wow howd you get that
Loren: took it.
Loren: that place is an organizational disaster
Loren: no one knows what anyone else is doing on many levels
Josh: thats sad to hear
Loren: I could have taken down all of their LA communications systems in about 1 second flat
Josh: but not suprising
Loren: NO security whatsoever
Loren: NONE
Loren: it's a joke
Josh: jesus
Loren: And i'm NOT exagerating man
Loren: I had full access to their entire VSAT system
Josh: i believe you
Josh: im sure their IT staff is way overworked and not the best
Loren: nah, they are good guys, they know their shit, they just don't think about it I guess.
Loren: they expect "security" to handle things
Loren: that's what I mean, there's no crosstalk
Josh: ahhh i see
Loren: I dunno, maybe on the deployments they aren't the best guys, but they seemed to have shit running well
Josh: well i guess they figure who would fuck with the red cross
Loren: today, I pretty much had to ignore everything I was told I shouldn't be doing to actually help people
Loren: yeah true
Josh: what were you told not to do
Loren: don't get involved in people's stories, blah blah blah
Loren: you can't do anything without some magical clearence by someone who doesn't exist
Loren: example:
Loren: they had ZERO mens socks, mens underwear, mens pants in average sizes. Which is ridiculous. There's truckloads of clothes in the back with tons of unsorted shit, and they don't have these BASIC FUCKING NECESSITIES? (side note... isn't that why they want cash donations... so they can fucking BUY that stuff if it's needed instead of relying on material donations???). So I was like fuck this, and my Mom called around VOA offices and located underwear and socks, and we drove to one of the offices and picked them up. Then...
Josh: wow thats awesome
Loren: We drove to the delivery dock and I talked my way around MP, Police, and Red Cross guys to bring the boxes in and put them with the other stuff so we could distrubute them
Loren: See... We asked the shelter manager why we couldn't just go buy them, with our own money, and bring them in
Loren: "Can't do that" was the answer
Loren: Can't just give them a box if they need one to put their stuff in
Loren: Can't just give them a bar of soap for the shower
Josh: why not?
Loren: Cause if one person gets one, everyone will come rushing
Loren: which is bullshit
Josh: thats so frustrating
Loren: you have no idea man
Loren: it was like that all day
Josh: im sure i dont
Loren: So we just said fuck it and did whatever we wanted
Loren: and no one stopped us
Loren: haha
Loren: That fucking vest is powerful
Loren: lol
Loren: OH...
Loren: so to get into the shelter, you have to pass through a metal detector at the front, gaurded by MPs
Loren: BUT, if you are Red Cross, you can walk through with the thing beeping like fucking crazy and the MP's just say whatever and you walk by
Loren: I had a large pocketknife on me all day.
Loren: Pretty sure I wasn't supposed to have that!
Loren: AND
Loren: another example of how they don't have their shit together.
Loren: The fucking Scientologists were there IN FORCE ... like 50 of them
Josh: trying to recruit people
Josh: ?>?
Loren: no, being volunteer "ministers"
Loren: They did more in an hour than I saw any Red Cross guys doing
Josh: you should post about that
Josh: oh well its good if they are helping
Loren: it was fucking creepy man
Loren: in an HOUR, they took the disaster area of the clothes piles, and made signs on the walls labeling gender, garment and size, sorted it all, and organized it
Loren: it was unreal
Loren: this is a place that has been running for over a week by the RC, and they did that shit in an HOUR
Josh: thats good though! if it helped
Loren: totally!
Josh: its ridic that the rc couldnt do it
Loren: They really had their shit together man
Loren: I mean, givin that they RC is sort of occupied feeding people and stuff, but they should have their basic needs met... I mean UNDERWEAR and a clean T-shirt
Loren: I can't tell you how many times I was asked for that stuff
Josh: its fucked people dont have that stuff this far out
Josh: i mean my aunt is in an apartment already in aaustin
Loren: BR doesn't have their shit together
Josh: some catholic charity is letting her stay there
Loren: Texas is where it's at. heheh.
Loren: Yeah, there are tons of people just showing up with busses and being like "load up if you want to go here, we have jobs and places for you to live"
Josh: hahah wow
Loren: that happened 3 times today
Loren: Microsoft had a bus there giving out t-shirts and tote bags and I think they had PC access
Loren: it's weird to see a bunch of evacuees and homeless wearing MS shirts
Loren: haha
Loren: I'm so pissed I didn't have my digital camera with me all day
Loren: I took a few lomos but nothing good I don't think
Josh: yeah man bring it from now on! seriously it would be amazing to see what this looks like
Josh: i wonder how long before it is under control
Josh: these peopel all have food and water, right?
Loren: I left it in Rob's camera bag like 3 weeks ago, so he had to mail it to me
Loren: should be here tomorrow
Josh: ahhh
Loren: yeah, lots of food and water and stuff in the shelters
Loren: and millions of toothbrushes
Loren: haha
Loren: That's the kind of shit I need pics off
Loren: of
Loren: PALLETS of toothbrushes
Loren: and CheezNips
Josh: hahah yeah man that sounds very surreal
Loren: and more diapers than you'd believe exist on earth
Josh: tons of kids? is there enough cots for everyone?
Josh: how is the trash disposal working
Loren: plenty of cots, and dunno about trash
Josh: ok im gonna read a bit
Josh: work has been hell, and a few intense support requests
Loren: word. I'm posting this IM log so I don't have to type all that shit out again
Loren: yeah
Josh: sweet
Josh: good for you doing this man
Josh: makes me proud
Loren: word =]
Loren: wish you could be here
Josh: me too man
Josh: much more useful than jockeying a keyboard
Loren: totally
Josh: lemme know if you need anything and i will find out about the truck thing
Josh: take care!
Loren: that would rule
Loren: late
