NYC Holiday Card Fundraiser

Hi Everyone. I am in the process of doing a Holiday Card Fundraiser up here in NYC utilizing all the great talent of artist friends. I am looking for an organization to collaborate with in Louisiana, so that way the credit goes to the South for this project. The name of our loosly affiliated group here is"Jambalaya Arts".

If we work now, then the cards can go on sale by Halloween and catch the big rush to buy Christmas cards and the like. I think the cards will be displayed in a box of 30 or so, and placed near the cashier inside stores in Manhattan. Each card will cost $3 and 100% of theproceeds will go toward disaster relief. I'd also like for all thecards to have an official stamp, sticker, or tag.

Wanna make some cards for the fundraiser? I ordered some recycled paper envelopes that are a red wine color. The size of the envelope is A8 or5-1/2 x
8-1/8". The size card that will fit is 5-3/8 x 7-3/4" folded inhalf. Prior to folding in half, the paper dimension is 10-3/4 x 7-3/4". In case you don't feel like measuring, tell me your address and I'll mail you a sample card.

Can anyone suggest an organization for us to work with in Louisiana? It would be helpful to have a letter of endorsement or permission to use a logo for the Holiday Card fundraiser. Also when the time comes, we may need some suggestions on where to donate the funds. I like the idea of supporting an arts-therapy based program, but don't know who may be planning, let alone implementing, this yet.

I'd appreciate any advice, as this project seems to have a lot of potential- and could be done successfully in many cities.

This sounds like fun!!! I need something to get me going creatively. I'll do some, if you don't mind them being somewhat architecturally themed. hehe.

perfect. nyc has a lot of architects living here that may like them! write to me when you need a mailing address, and I'll get your cards out there.

ok. i'm guessing we should get card-stock weight paper? what do you suggest?
LaLaLaLaura said at 7:19 PM 09-26-2005:
Sure. You are so on it, Myriam. That's a good idea. And whatever is appropriate to your working methods & materials as an artist will be great. They don't need to all look alike, but they do all need to be functional for this purpose.

how about the baton rouge mental health center, habitat for humanity, or save the children? the latter two have set up special programs just for hurricane relief. i would suggest just asking for permission to write "all proceeds will be donated to blank" and not for an official logo, opfficial logos are usually a bitch to get permission for.

    habitat!!!!

it even has extra-southern roots. And usually they are the agency with the most long-term thinking and planning going into efforts. I mean in most situations. I dunno specifically what's going on down there though.

Pehaps there was a misunderstanding. The proceeds are not intended to benefit the Louisiana sponsor, but rather give an opportunity for some organization to get their name out there in the NYC community. This lends credibility to the fundraiser.

The recipient(s) of funds will all be related to disaster relief. Some will be arts therapy based. Habitat will probably be another. If there is a specific group that matches what we feel are goals of "Jabalaya Arts", then we these groups will receive aid.

Since the project is very idealistic anyway... why not have a voting system, and a vote in January after the fundraiser ends? Making one card earns one vote. Making 100 cards earns 100 votes. The more cards you make, the more your vote will count. The goal is a multitude of great saleable cards by Oct 31 that will generate money for the people we all know deserve it.

you'll also need to design a display and sign to put the cards in and get some of those plastic sleeves for each card so they don't get dirty.

Word. The Virgo inside is organizing away. Thinking about Rafia to tie envelopes to the cards. Got a silk screen friend. In the works, in the works.

I think I'm gonna paint precise, black and white silhouettes of different very famous icon houses (the farnsworth house, goudi's apt. building with the crazy chimneystacks, etc.) and show a bright happy santa coming down each chimney. They will be sleek. Then inside it will be something like "hope santa brings you cheer this holiday season" or something, maybe something catchier. But on the back it will say, for sure:

"You have helped bring holiday cheer to victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with the purchase of this card. Thank you."
myriam [email] said at 1:08 PM 09-27-2005:
I'm hoping it will make people think about how some people won't have a home for this Christmas.

    perfect. perfect!
