I can breathe a little easier now. I know it doesn't seem like much but I interviewed for a managerial position. In 7+ years at that other place none of my GMs ever felt that I was management material. Supervisor material sure, but not management material. More importantly, it'll be much easier filling out lease applications if I can say I work at this place and make this much.
reggie [email] said at 12:51 PM 07-28-2006: Most def, it depends on when I start working. Like I'm thinking for a time I may need to commute between my folks house and B-more (which my sister is already doing.) If I don't start until say the second week of August then I'll spend most of next week 'partment hunting.
But I can definitely give you two days notice if'n it happens that I need to crash.
reggie [email] said at 11:08 PM 07-27-2006: Brad you're amazing. You're like our very own Eeyore. The response from most people would be like Milky and Meredith's. What's your response? "Do you really want to be a manager?"
No Brad, I'd much rather be somebody's schlamiel for the rest of my retail career. The truth is, do I want to be a manager where I work now? Of course not, that place is going down the tubes. But would I want to be a manager at an independent record store? No surely that's going to suck. Why would anyone want to do that?
Why would I want to manage at a place where the person conducting my interview was wearing a Rancid t-shirt and jeans? What was I thinking?
reggie [email] said at 10:20 AM 07-28-2006: Well thanks dude.
I'm just sayin' though, how 'bout a little bit more of a positive feedback? Back when I made the original post about the apartment you said something about an efficiency potentially being too small.
I ain't mad or nothin', I'm just saying technically as of the end of July I will have A) no job and B) no place to live. The last thing I want is a friend of mine questioning whether or not I should take a shot at a management position at a record store.
art [email] said at 10:28 AM 07-28-2006: good luck reggie. you sound like management material - you get frustrated because you see how things can be done better and care too much to just ignore the situation. once you get one mgmt position on your resume, the next one will be a lot easier
mary [email] said at 10:35 AM 07-28-2006: I don't think Brad was trying to be a downer. The truth is, plenty of people DON'T want to be a manager, because they don't think it's worth the hassle and stress. I think it's a good question to ask yourself, and Brad is a good friend to bring it up. My mentor at work ALWAYS asks me this when I am considering taking on some new project or being evaluated for a promotion. Even if on the surface it seems like an automatic good thing, she likes me to probe a little deeper and make sure I really know what I'm getting into. Make sense?
reggie [email] said at 10:51 AM 07-28-2006: Sure it makes sense but it's not like I don't have any management experience at all. I've been at the next step under for the last two and half years. And truthfully, running the cafe where I work now is as close to running your own store as you can get without actually doing so. The only aspect I was not responsible for was hiring. Otherwise you've got to manage your own inventory, training, merchandising. I had to learn how to deal with vendors, handle equipment repairs, sanitation. Oh and don't forget my two years of loss prevention experience as well.
Not to mention doing all of that under a GM and HR manager (my immediate superior) who hardly gave me any support, didn't send me to get properly trained until five months after I'd already had the job and generally couldn't give two craps about the cafe.
mary [email] said at 11:21 AM 07-28-2006: I don't doubt that! And it sounds like you do know that you want. I'm just saying, Brad isn't trying to be a hater. Not today.
kara [email] said at 12:32 PM 07-28-2006: yeah I didn't think you said that he was even trying to be a hater, just that he was looking on the negative side.
as a regular killoggs reader, I know you've already thought this stuff over and know what you want
brad [email] said at 11:44 AM 07-29-2006: I was only raising a question that I've asked even myself a time or two. But being a manager in an independent record store might not be so stressful. And I guess you know plenty about it, now that you've been interviewed. I just think it's silly to say, "Whoo hoo! Congratulations!" any time a friend is excited about something, when the friend might very well be in a situation he'll come to regret. I'm not being an Eeyore, just offering a bit of caution. That said, if you really want this, I wish you the best.
reggie [email] said at 9:10 PM 07-30-2006: Oh, also regarding this: But being a manager in an independent record store might not be so stressful
I guess my main point is that as I sit here writing this response right now I am without a job and without a place to live so whether potentially being a manager is going to be stressful or not is the LAST thing on my mind.
