My Brains

I've been getting headaches for a little over a month. They're weird headaches. They start at the base of my skull very suddenly and then shoot up to my forehead. I get them at weird times. Sometimes I'll just be jogging along and my head will explode. Once I was in class and the guy I was working with did a really easy take-down and as soon as I hit the mat (correctly, too) my head exploded with pain. Once during pull-ups. Once doing deltoids. A couple times while running. Thanksgiving day I picked up a table and walked four steps with it and my head exploded.

The time I was doing pull-ups I was with a friend who happens to be a physical therapist. I suppose the severity of it freaked him out (it was only after several shots of jack daniels that the pain became bearable) so the next time I saw him, he introduced me to a brown belt who happens to be a brain surgeon. I got hooked up with an MRI. Gratis!

So I've been hanging on to my MRI pics since Friday. I didn't want to tell my parents until I knew what was up so that I wouldn't worry them if it was nothing.

And my brain is fine. No tumors or anything. So I'm pretty happy about that.

Still don't know what's causing the headaches though.

rad! I'm glad you are nefarious-mass-of-cells free.

My migraines are caused by a combination of change in sleep patterns, weird sinus shit in the atmosphere, stress, and... actually that's it. They follow the exact description you note, except that they tend to give me nausea as well (a common symptom). Have you seen your regular doctor about them yet?

They probably already told you all this, but supposedly headaches that start in the neck are called "tension" or "stress" headaches, whatever that means.

When I went through a really bad period of migraines, my doc gave me beta blockers to take once a day. They're actually for people recovering from heart attacks, but during trials they found out that one totally random side effect is that they block migraines. Maybe that's worth a try?

I've had migranes before. These aren't migranes, but Greg actually did suggest some kind of heart kind of thingy at one point and he kind of believes that it's related to stress and/or anemia and something to do with my neck. It's really weird though, we've been trying to figure it out and can't.

Yeah, the next step is a normal doctor. Stupid shitty health insurance. I wish I knew one of THOSE I could get in for free.
myriam [email] said at 10:49 PM 12-05-2006:
hmm, weird and scary. good luck!

your health insurance doesn't cover doctor's visits? :(
meredith [email] said at 10:55 PM 12-05-2006:
I get one dr. visit a year. But it can only be for certain things. I should probably go and just try it.
myriam [email] said at 10:32 PM 12-05-2006:
Haha, I remember when I got an MRI I was like OMG THOSE ARE MY BRAINS, and I showed them to all my friends and they were like "...yeah, so?" Haha. I guess they weren't as thrilled by the concept as I was.

How weird to be able to look at your own brains!!!! What was your MRI like? Was it freaky??
meredith [email] said at 10:56 PM 12-05-2006:
The MRI was okay. I was very concerned that I had to hold still for the entire time. I had the urge to giggle maddly as I was going into it. The first scan was only 30 seconds, so I just counted to thirty. After that I started thinking about things. Like what I wanted to do, people who pissed me off that day, things I had to do tomorrow, things I really need to get done and just kind of zoned out. It was very very loud.

The tongue is a really huge and strange muscle.
meredith [email] said at 10:54 PM 12-05-2006:
Wanna see a huge ass tongue? Check this picture out!

Actually the things that Greg said upon looking at my MRI were:
    1. What a nice straight sacrum(sp?). Mine's all crooked.
    2. Your skull is very symetrical.
    3. Wow! Your sinuses are HUGE! Look at that! The roots of your teeth go into them!!
    4. You have the biggest tongue I've ever seen!
myriam [email] said at 10:45 PM 12-05-2006:
The weirdest thing about this picture is how easy it is to tell that it's you.
meredith [email] said at 11:00 PM 12-05-2006:
How freaky is THIS one!?

art [email] said at 3:39 AM 12-06-2006:
Cool pictures! and i'm glad there aren't any aliens living in there.

maybe the headache start from a pinched neve rin your back or something since they happen when you are exerting yourself?
josh [email] said at 8:51 AM 12-06-2006:
this shit is crazy! thanks for posting them, and glad you don't have a tumor or something
marcia [email] said at 12:03 PM 12-06-2006:
Sound like it may be something dealing with your nerves--maybe get your back and nexk checked out. Running is hard on your back--and from what you've said, you run for extended periods of time.

Great pics! Seeing your own brain must be very surreal.

I had an ultrasound of my heart done once and sent it to my mom as a Valentine's present to show her I was a-ok.

i know i'm late to the game, but i recently realized that i've been having mild migraines for several years. it just didn't occur to me what they were, until finally listening to my friends' descriptions and comparing them to my own experience.

do yours manifest in the base of your neck AND make you feel mildly woozy, kind of like a weight is settling on your brain for a few instants and keeping you from thinking straight? does it occasionally affect your hearing during those moments, like a blanket settling over your head and shoulders while your neck kinda NUMBS?

cause i have found a huge benefit from Vitamin B-complex. i already take a food-based supplement with a daily amount of B. Solgar makes a Pantothenic Acid supplement that ups the intake (totally within acceptable levels) and, you know, now i pee even more yellow. it's great at parties.

but it HAS improved things a lot, though apparently it's not helping me sleep through this massive black tea intake tonight.

okay, hope things get better!
