Dragonfly Nymph

This gross little bug crawled out of my pond and metamorphosized into a dragonfly. It's changing by the hour. Cool.

So that's how that happens. Cool.

When I was a kid, I thought dragonflies were special. I'd spend long moments talking with them. They are very expressive with their eyes. Plus they can turn their heads a bit. This make them look as though they are concerned, attentive listeners.

wait wait wait, that nasty black bug is the larva (shell) the dragonfly came out of?

    Yes, you are correct. It came out of that bug, called a nymph, that lived in the bottom of my pond for at least a year. The nymph has gills and eats small fish and insects. Then it comes out of the water, grows lungs, and out comes this dragonfly. I just learned all about it last night. This is new to me, and pretty cool. Glad you like it.

      It's amazing how beautiful the critters that come out of their shells are--my favorite will always be cicadas coming out of their nymph shells like ghosts.

      Insect metamophisizing is absolutely incredible.

      Your pics are gorgeous. And I didn't know that was the first part of the life cycle of a dragonfly. Fascinating...
