I was in Chicago this weekend, my favorite city. Met John, saw Meredith do martial arts, saw Meredith's play, ran into Jess on the train totally randomly, shopped, ate waffles, drank, and took a few pictures. Wheeeee! More photos in the responses.
julie [email] said at 9:48 PM 08-23-2006: John and Meredith picked me up at the airport at the asscrack of dawn (THANKS guys!!!) and we had breakfast at the Grind:
Then John and I went to watch Meredith do martial arts. One dude in her class looked just like Patrick Swayze:
We were giggling too much and I was worried that he might've spied me trying to take his picture, and also we were really bored, so we went down the street for a while. I had a Bloody Mary that arrived sporting every possible garnish, with the regrettable exception of bacon:
Back at Meredith's place, we decided to see if she could really fit into the ginormous martial arts bag she carries to and from class. Let's see:
Yes! She fits!
This was supremely amusing.
After a while, she seemed quite at home in there:
John reads Killoggs:
We repaired to a German bar after some light window shopping, and John called some twinkie in Boston:
Finally, I remembered that I brought a real camera, not just a crappy cameraphone. I like trains:
Shopping with Meredith for skinny jeans, I discovered some decapitated bodies stashed in a hallway:
No trip to Chicago would be complete without the traditional drinks in the lounge on the 96th floor of the Hancock building:
Our drinks enjoyed the view:
I had "the Skyscraper":
Meredith contemplates the horizon:
Buildings!
The next morning on the way to the train, I saw a dead green bird. Goodbye, Chicago:

myriam [email] said at 1:00 AM 08-25-2006: I was thinking the same thing. Also: I love your new hair color!!! It looks like it suits you, but of course I must reserve judgment until I see you in person. I like the necklace, too. Is it one of those shell-type things?
julie [email] said at 7:19 PM 08-25-2006: Thanks! The hair is new, just did it last week after spending 3 months as a bleach blonde. Baby steps. The necklace is a new Chicago souvenir, capiz shell to remind me that I want to find a vintage capiz shell chandelier/mobile thingy someday.
myriam [email] said at 12:09 PM 08-26-2006: I'm kind of tired of every man wanting my hair to be long and brown. You know? I like it best short and curly. And I've always wanted to try bleach blonde--I put on a wig like that once and it looked stupendous! :D On the other hand, the permanent hair damage makes me wary. So don't worry.
julie [email] said at 4:57 PM 08-26-2006: I really enjoyed being a bleach blonde, and my hair wasn't as fried as I was worried it would be. I started using a lot more leave-in conditioner, and that made a big difference. If your hair is short to begin with, you really aren't damaging a whole lot of it. I never dyed my hair when it was long, but now that it's short, it grows back so quickly that the damaged parts get cut off and it's all new again! Go for it! Chop! Bleach!
ed [email] said at 5:50 PM 08-26-2006: I refuse to be responsible for "every man". All I know is, the Love Of My Life had long brown hair, so I prefer to look at women who are similarly tressed.
Other people may have hangups for entirely different reasons. That's triflin' to me.
RS said at 11:33 PM 03-24-2007: Long hair is awesome on a woman. Of course guys are disappointed when pretty hair is whacked off!! We must accept short hair on chicks, but we don't hafta like it.
christian [email] said at 4:43 PM 08-24-2006: it costs money just to get up there in the hancock building doesnt it? how much are the drinks once youre up there?
julie [email] said at 7:37 PM 08-24-2006: It doesn't cost anything just to ride the elevator up there, but yeah, the drinks are a little pricey. So you're paying for the view in an indirect way.
Also that weekend was the Air & Water Show, so random formations of Blue Angels and things were flying by at (seemingly) eye-level. It was rad.
kate [email] said at 12:05 AM 08-25-2006: oh my god, meredith in that bag is fucking hilarious. it's like her putting her cat in the backpack. papoose, kind of?
meredith [email] said at 10:03 AM 08-25-2006: Also, Jules, what was that beer you had called? I wanted to order it when I went in on Wednesday but I couldn't remember what it was called so I panicked and just went with my standby.
meredith [email] said at 2:01 PM 08-28-2006: It is the Franziskans;ldkfjasldk something. I ordered it on Saturday by pointing at the little beer menu. It was nummy.
john [email] said at 1:21 AM 08-26-2006: As long as Tony the bar-keep is wiping down the counter behind us or something with a shit eating grin on his face.
