Swedish Dreams

Seven days into homeownership, and I'm discovering that it costs more to furnish the fucking house than it did to buy it. Or at least it feels that way.

I have been housesitting for the past six months, so I haven't had any furniture, except a bed. Too bad I can't get my bed up my stairs. The double box spring won't fit. Rather than working out some scheme to bring the box spring in through my window, I just gave my bed to Rick. I doubt there will be any trouble getting it down to the basement.

Ben, Josh and I drove up to Ikea in Baltimore, where I bought a new bed, mattress and bureau. There's a lot of cute, cheap stuff at Ikea, but it's not very sturdy. You get what you pay for, I guess. They're delivering that stuff tomorrow.

That just leaves the rest of the house.

All are welcome to visit. As long as you don't mind sitting on the floor.

i sat on the floor in my apartment for a good while. the fact that it has 14 foot ceilings somehow made the floor seem much much lower than most floors. cinder blocks and pine shelves make great, sturdy, inexpensive shelves. and entertainment centers. and benches. and desks..

Oh, if only it were shelves that I needed. I don't even have stuff to put on shelves.

It's the price of couches that blows my mind.

grrr... you are doing this so you can't have houseguests...

baltimore, and I'm possibly moving toward dc...i work in rockville...BUT i don't have a vehicle big enough to carry these (though when I move I will, unless I pay people to move my shit, which is expensive and wasteful considering I don't have alot, but damn I hate moving). email me and I'll give you the lowdown on the stuff...they're not the best but they definately work

Furnish your house the way my parents did - a little "roadside assistance"
Emmaleigh said at 1:47 PM 02-10-2003:
I have gotten some great stuff w/ this method! I was talking to my folks (who have more furniture than they know what to do w?) and they only bought like 7 things. all the other stuff came from friends, relatives, and the side of the road.

Luckily, we had tons of alley-score furniture, from apartment living, when we bought this house. Go find a college area, around semester changes, and cruise around the apartment complexes. A lot of kids get crap that they find they don't need, once they get a roommate with better crap, or move back to mom's.

I wouldn't mind scavenging for stuff. The only problem is I don't drive. And I don't have a truck. So how do I get these finds back to my place?
Emmaleigh said at 1:42 PM 02-11-2003:
you have to find someone to help you. pick a day or two to look for stuff and then find a person with a big car or a truck to drive around with you. I would volunteer my truck, but she would prolly die on the way there.
