what would josh s1sk do?

amber got offered an assistant manager position at great clips, the sewer of salons but its a good paying job compared to what she gets at the swanky hipster salon she works at now. actually its a great job and she will be making flow out the butt hole. trubble is that she loves the swanky hipster salon and the people there and especially the boss. she told the great clips peeps that she would only take the position if she could keep her swanky hipster salon chair for 1 saturday every other week. she really wants this job and she said she needs career advice. im throwing the ball over the fence and in yoor court. can u, killoggs, give her some advice as to what u think would be a good thing to do if she isnt allowed to work at swanky hipster salon because of their conflict of boogers i mean interest agreement. do you think she should quit her happy job for a more stable green hectic job? or do you think we should all drop our pants and be strippers?

What would happen if she went to the swanky place and said ... hey i wanna work here but i also need more $$$. These other people say they will give me more $$$. Why don't you just give me the same amount and I will stay?

yeah that would work but i think that it just gets slow there because when people dont have the money to go to the swanky place they go to dumpy place for a fraction of the cost. its been really slow at the swanky place and she works there getting a percentage of the cuts as a wage. she works from her "clientelle" or whatever and at the dumpy place she would get : an hourly wage, benefits, and bonus stuff (fancy hair razors?) so its kinda like she's her own boss at the swanky place she makes as much as she works...

I think Amber should e-mail me and let me write a whole career advice column about her. That's what I think.

All three. Friday nights at the club and Saturday at the cool place. Weeks doing the green thing.

Is that possible?
milky [email] said at 8:14 PM 06-11-2004:
On what Mary mentioned, is it possible that the swank place pays less because of turnover, ie, they have to move people out when the cool factor is over...or do people start there as a stepping stone to owning their own place?

oh i also forgot to mention the swanky salon is really a great place its kinda like a little mom and pop store except that pop is divorced from mom and has a long pony tail and rides a harley and buy's me bottles of wine on days i randomly visit. its a wonderful place, just not very busy... they are really nice there!

Which is more important at this stage in life, money or happiness?

There isn't a trace of sarcasm in that question. I am now working at a job where I make a LOT less than market value for my skillset. The job satisfaction far outweighs my need for money (which is ridiculous, considering how much debt I have). As long as I can pay the bills, I'm stayin' where I'm at. I hated my previous job, and dreaded getting up in the morning. I love my current job. I still hate getting up, but not because I hate my job anymore... haha! These days, I just want to sleep in.

I'm with Ed. If you don't need the money, be happy. IF you do really need the money, you'll be happier when you can pay the bills. I would assume in the hair salon world there are only three routes to big money. Work for somebody else and be the star, go out on your own and have your own salon, or work for a corp. She needs to decide at this point which route she wants her life to go.

im with ed too. ed always has good things to say!

Both look great on a resume. She should talk to some people who have worked as managers at crappy places and see how the market treated them afterwards.
luster [email] said at 5:29 AM 06-12-2004:
ack! actually she has been working doing hair for like 8 years and she has managed shops before. she likes the flow but its crazy stress. its funny because i dont think too many of her management adventures ended too well especially with her bing a double scorpio and all...
amy [email] said at 3:56 AM 06-21-2004:
scorpios are great at managing. other people are just not great at listening so we must punish them-HARSHLY.

I was just faced with the same decision, 2 months ago. I played them off each other until the job I *really* wanted agreed to pay me just a little less than the great-paying, boring job.

It was a tough decision but I went with my gut. FIRST though I made sure that even the lesser-paying job would actually work with my budget--it just would be a little bit tighter but I could do it. Then I took it.

I sooo made the right decision. I LOVE my job. I can't imagine how depressed I'd be if every day I had to get up and go to that boring high-paying job. It is so worth the loss of a little money.

Hope that helps.

Definitely play them off each other, though, you'd be AMAZED how much higher jobs will go when they realize you are wanted elsewhere. I got offered way more money than I should have, to be honest.
