 | rick [email] said at 6:18 PM 12-06-2005: "Time Bandits" was a odd duck indeed within the pond of cinema. But I do not find "Howard the Shop of Horrors," "The Last Starfighter," "The Beastmaster" and "Willow" to be at all bizaare. "Enemy Mine" might be just because of its tone and because of the circumstances with the child of the alien. |
 | rick [email] said at 6:19 PM 12-06-2005: What was weird about "Weird Science" besides the title? |
 | craig [email] said at 6:20 PM 12-06-2005: 2 high school boys create a woman using their computer? Chet gets turned into a giant turd??? |
 | rick [email] said at 6:21 PM 12-06-2005: The idea of creating an artificial person is not really new or bizaare. You do have me though with the metamorphosis into feces. |
 | woody [email] said at 6:39 PM 12-06-2005: turd? He was a giant frog-like thing that ate bugs. Did I miss something? |
 | rick [email] said at 6:42 PM 12-06-2005: Perhaps his form was analogous to excressence in terms of its unpleasantness. |
 | craig [email] said at 6:45 PM 12-06-2005: I was pretty sure he was a giant turd. I do remember him eating the fly, though. Does anyone else weigh in on this issue? |
 | woody [email] said at 6:53 PM 12-06-2005: This is the best I could find:
Inconclusive. |
 | josh [email] said at 10:00 AM 12-07-2005: Two super-nerds, Gary (Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smith), unable to find girls on their own, hack into the Pentagon's mainframe and use government technology to genetically engineer "the perfect woman." The result is "Lisa," (Kelly LeBrock), a sexed-up "80s babe" with Einstein's IQ and inexplicable sci-fi powers. Self-aware from the moment of her creation, Lisa sets about transforming Gary and Wyatt from nerds into men through a series of wacky and bizarre adventures, which include such things as Lisa summoning up the cast of The Road Warrior to crash a party at Gary's house, and Lisa turning Gary's abusive brother Chet (Bill Paxton) into a gigantic, anthropomorphic mound of feces. - wikipedia
IMDB:
Joe Gieb .... Blob Operator
Kevin Thompson .... Blob Operator
So a "blob", not a frog, at least. But a blob of WHAT? |
Randy said at 9:25 PM 12-06-2005: I had this almost exact same argument recently... I think Zack was actually one of the people involved(?).
I still say he's a giant pile of feces and not a frog. Or maybe a giant shit-frog, but not just a regular giant frog. |
 | josh [email] said at 9:52 AM 12-07-2005: they turned him into a pile of shit |
 | craig [email] said at 10:09 AM 12-07-2005: Thank you. Even as a kid there was never any debate in my mind that Chet was turned into a huge steaming pile of shit. |
 | craig [email] said at 6:23 PM 12-06-2005: Also, we can debate how weird these movies may have been, but I'd really rather talk about how awesome they all were.
If you can think of any other awesome movies from the 80's, please list them.
Also, I left out the obvious ones like Conan the Barbarian, Goonies, Masters of the Universe, gremlins, etc. |
 | christian [email] said at 6:36 PM 12-06-2005: yeah willow was not bizarre at all, it was pretty standard fantasy fare that happened to be really good. |
 | christian [email] said at 6:43 PM 12-06-2005: i wouldn't say 'legend' was entirely standard but i'd throw it in a subcategory with willow. also 'labyrinth'. if david bowie singing to muppets isnt bizarre, i dont know what is |
 | dave [email] said at 6:47 PM 12-06-2005: plus labryinth has a teen Jennifer Connley for anyone who wants to indulge their pedofillia fantasies. |
Shell said at 1:17 AM 12-07-2005: When I was younger and first saw Enemy Mine I thought the alien child was named "Jammies." That would be weird. Luckily, repeated viewings and the novella showed me the Zammis truth :). |
 | ed [email] said at 6:35 PM 12-06-2005: Dude!
Good, nay, great?! Yes! Bizarre? Not at all!
Howard The Duck
Weird Science
Big Trouble In Little China
House
Krull
Cat People
The Last Starfighter (again, Catherine Mary Stewart is one of the hottest females God ever made). See also: Night of the Comet.
Enemy Mine
These were all seminal movies of the era.
And I could come up with a coupla dozen more, but will just throw out:
Better Off Dead.
Kuh-lassic. |
 | craig [email] said at 6:37 PM 12-06-2005: ooh, I saw night of the comet. Very cool movie. |
 | cecil [email] said at 6:54 PM 12-06-2005: Cat People has a great David Bowie theme song too. |
 | kiche [email] said at 8:03 PM 12-06-2005: i love krull. |
artsanscranium said at 10:18 PM 12-06-2005: i loved the video game |
Shell said at 1:27 AM 12-07-2005: Good, nay, great?! Yes! Bizarre? Not at all!
Big Trouble In Little China
If you don't think Big Trouble in Little China is bizarre, your world is even mysterious and strange than I know :).
Night of the Comet is great. Strong women characters rule! |
 | josh [email] said at 10:01 AM 12-07-2005: house 2 was weirder than 1, and better |
 | craig [email] said at 10:13 AM 12-07-2005: I saw House 2 as well. Which one had a weird Zombie vietnam sequence? |
 | amy [email] said at 1:30 AM 12-08-2005: House 2 had this crazy chick with long fingernails. She ripped open another dude's stomach and bugs fell out. I had an aversion to horizontal stripes for a long time after that. |
 | christian [email] said at 6:38 PM 12-06-2005: big trouble in little china is completely fucking bizarre and fantastic. as a kid i took most of it for granted while watching it now blows my mind consistantly.
i cant believe ive never seen krull
everyone needs to watch conan the barbarian with arnold and director commentary |
 | craig [email] said at 6:40 PM 12-06-2005: I feel exactly the same way about Big Trouble in Little China.
Conan the Barbarian is one of my favorite movies of all time. I will have to get it on DVD and watch it with the commentary. |
 | christian [email] said at 6:41 PM 12-06-2005: i cannot overhype enough how simply amazing it is. not only is it the only commentary ive watched more than once, but ive probably seen it 10 times, usually with new people each time, all of whom are completely engaged, in hysterics, and in disbelief for the full two hours |
NathanK said at 8:42 PM 12-06-2005: The Golden Child seemed to try to parallel it. |
 | christian [email] said at 1:54 PM 12-07-2005: with the same actors no less. they share literally 5 actors and were released 6 months apart |
 | dave [email] said at 6:44 PM 12-06-2005: i think mortal kombat stole the idea of "Raiden" from Big Trouble in Little China.
Krull was so cool, the video game was great too! |
 | dave [email] said at 6:44 PM 12-06-2005: i think mortal kombat stole the idea of "Raiden" from Big Trouble in Little China.
Krull was so cool, the video game was great too! |
 | rick [email] said at 6:45 PM 12-06-2005: Nah, I think he was just based off of the Taoist master stock character from old kung fu films. |
 | rick [email] said at 6:41 PM 12-06-2005: Actually, "Dream a Little Dream" was a rather bizaare film. |
 | craig [email] said at 6:42 PM 12-06-2005: Dream a little Dream is another awesome one that I forgot about. I also saw Red Dawn, but I don't think I have seen any of these others. |
 | ed [email] said at 7:29 PM 12-06-2005: Wow. I didn't realize Xanadu was (technically) an 80's film, just because it was SO 70's.
But if there's one "celebrity" I'd rather "be with" than Catherine Mary Stewart, it's Olivia Newton-John.
Okay, yeah, I'm old. Shut up. |
 | cecil [email] said at 6:41 PM 12-06-2005: BUCKAROO BANZAI
I just rewatched it recently and it is incredible. |
 | dave [email] said at 6:43 PM 12-06-2005: the movie is fucking unbelievable! |
 | cecil [email] said at 6:49 PM 12-06-2005: It's especially amazing to see today. |
Shell said at 1:31 AM 12-07-2005: In June I forced some friends at a dinner party to watch it with me. Not sure they all appreciated it, but I luuurrrrve this movie :).
Yay for you and Dave!
Little known Shellfact: I once spent most of the night in Perfect Tommy's hotel room. |
 | rick [email] said at 6:47 PM 12-06-2005: The soundtrack to "Transformers" is awesome in every sense of the word. |
 | craig [email] said at 6:48 PM 12-06-2005: Yes, the heavy metal version of the Transformers them song by Lion rules. |
 | kara [email] said at 6:47 PM 12-06-2005: The Peanut Butter Solution |
 | cecil [email] said at 6:51 PM 12-06-2005: Fire and Ice is interesting just for the novelty of the collaboration of Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi, but it's pretty bad. |
 | kiche [email] said at 7:42 PM 12-06-2005: oops.
what cecil said.
except there's some interesting stuff in there despite being super cheezy. |
artsanscranium said at 10:20 PM 12-06-2005: Wizards from Bakshi. I think he lost it all on that film |
 | ed [email] said at 7:53 PM 12-06-2005: Holy crap, I can't believe Scanners was an 80's movie!
One of my favorite memories of all time is from Regency Square Mall in Tampa. There was a store called "Video Concepts", which was in said mall. They often showed cool stuff on the big-screen TVs facing the mall, including a LaserDisc (shutup, I'm old) of a Fleetwood Mac concert...
But the best, undeniably, was a clip they had culled (and altered) from Rocky. At the climax of the movie, just as Rocky delivered the massive blow to Apollo Creed's jaw, they spliced in the scene from Scanners where the anti-hero caused the bad guy's head to explode.
It's something that I still wish to this day that I had a copy of. It was amazing.
And to see little kids (and Barb!) stand there to watch Rocky's ending, only to see exploding brains? It's something that you can't understand unless you were there. Like the (older) hippies describe Woodstock. Seriously, it was stunning. |
 | kiche [email] said at 8:02 PM 12-06-2005: also, the princess bride. |
 | craig [email] said at 8:52 PM 12-06-2005: Mad Max beyond thunderdome was awesome. I want to get it on dvd. |
Randy said at 9:27 PM 12-06-2005: Does Nausicaa actually count? I mean, was it even released in the US in the 80's? |
 | kiche [email] said at 11:31 AM 12-07-2005: i saw it on cable in the 80s.
in craigs original list he has two foreign films.
time bandits was a british film, and the first film he has listed, the quest for fire, was a french film.
so unless the list bans films by non-whites, i think it belongs here. |
Randy said at 2:52 PM 12-07-2005: Yeah... for some reason I just don't think of Miyazaki's films as fitting in with any time period I guess. In my mind, they kind of exist outside of time. I know that sounds kind of flakey, but the idea of considering any of his films "80's movies" doesn't click in my mind, regardless of when they were released.
But yes, your point is taken. |
 | kiche [email] said at 3:29 PM 12-07-2005: for some reason i really think of nausicaa as being an 80s movie.
it's sort of like robotech. something that was so 80s but at the same time was never really popular. |
 | abby [email] said at 3:31 PM 12-07-2005: it is 80s as shit. listen to that music, look at that animation, the creatures, suffer under that plotline. |
 | abby [email] said at 3:04 PM 12-07-2005: altered states, i didn't see until my experimental teens. oh man that movie blew my mind.
nausicaa was one big fuck-up though, all this stupid shit about the toxic jungle and do not reveal the secrets of the toxic jungle! goddamnit whatever you guys! |
 | amy [email] said at 4:17 PM 12-07-2005: i still get goosebumps. william hurt is my love slave. |
Bob said at 7:51 PM 12-06-2005: Wow, I remember Troll, but I'd forgotten that not one but TWO characters are named Harry Potter... I smell a lawsuit! |
 | craig [email] said at 8:53 PM 12-06-2005: Troll had some pretty creepy music as well. |
 | denman [email] said at 8:51 PM 12-06-2005: "SPACE HERPES!? NO ONE TOLD ME WE HAD SPACE HERPES!!" |

 | kiche [email] said at 9:34 PM 12-06-2005: corey haim: me, myself and i
unbelievable, if you can find it.
rick can give you a much better description than me. though he'll deny it, this is his all time favorite film. |
 | rick [email] said at 9:41 PM 12-06-2005: "Corey Haim: Me, Myself and I" is indeed by favorite all-time film (just edging out Mr. T's "Be Somebody or be somebody else's fool"). I am in the middle of a dissertation on this film, which is arguably the greatest work of art Western Civilization has ever put forth. |
 | rick [email] said at 9:57 PM 12-06-2005: Other films bearing the Killoggs Seal of Approval:1) "Over the Top"-a long-time favorite of Kiche and the best film about arm-wrestling truck drivers to date 2) "Radioactive Dreams"- Just your typical action-adventure-science-fiction-musical-fantasy in the post-nuclear world. Nuff said. 3)"Mr. T: Be Somebody or be somebody else's fool"-Ever heard Mr. T rap? Now you can 4)"No Holds Barred" -Hulk Hogan AND Tiny Zeus Lister were robbed of Oscars for this film "DC Cab" -You havn't seen this film?!?! And you call yourself a DC scenester . . .(Yet another film with Mr. T) 5)"Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo" -Either get down or step down 6) "The Money Pit" -Mary decided to buy her house after seeing this film. |
 | kiche [email] said at 11:34 AM 12-07-2005: the only film on that list i would deny being my favorite all time film is "over the top".
dc cab is a masterpiece of cinema. i would never write a dissertation on it. to write about dc cab is an insult to the image. |
 | rick [email] said at 3:14 PM 12-07-2005: Sample Dialogue:"Why you doin' this?!?!! -Mr. T to a prostitute "I need the bread!" -Prostitute to Mr. T "Work in a bakery!!!" -Mr. T's retort |
 | dave [email] said at 10:59 PM 12-06-2005: i just found it, and lifted it off ebay! |

Raising Arizona |
 | amy [email] said at 3:06 AM 12-07-2005: ohhh, Ladyhawke.
Mannequin
Dead Calm was quite p[opular in hs. I think thats the name, the breakthrough Kenneth Brannagh film. |
 | myriam [email] said at 9:25 AM 12-07-2005: Mannequin!
For that matter, Splash and Big were kind of odd, too. How come we don't see mutations/things coming to life and romancing humans anymore? |
 | josh [email] said at 10:05 AM 12-07-2005: jennifer garner did a movie recently that was similar to big |
 | myriam [email] said at 12:05 PM 12-07-2005: Oh yeah, that 13-30 thing, I forgot! |
 | craig [email] said at 10:14 AM 12-07-2005: ooh, I thought Splash was so awesome when I was a kid. I wonder if it would still hold up today. |
 | meredith [email] said at 12:10 PM 12-07-2005: Dude, I used to love Mannequin and Splash when I was little. Actually, whenever I watch those movies, I still remember what my parents said when they were explaining certain parts to me. FYI, parents, the kids will REMEMBER! |
 | josh [email] said at 10:04 AM 12-07-2005: you are thinking of Dead Again, Dead Calm is a australian thriller |
 | amy [email] said at 3:07 AM 12-07-2005: The Lost Boys |

It's purely a coincidence that both of these have the word "monster" in the title. They're just the first ones I thought of. |

 | josh [email] said at 10:13 AM 12-07-2005: ROAD WARRIOR : still one of the best action films ever |
 | craig [email] said at 10:15 AM 12-07-2005: Yes, I love all of the Mad Max movies. |
 | reggie [email] said at 10:17 AM 12-07-2005: I don't feel like reading through all these but has anyone mentioned The Black Hole yet? Or is that too obvious? |
H. Pommefrittes said at 10:36 AM 12-07-2005: I think "The Black Hole" is 1979. Even if it was released in '80, it's definitely a 70's movie in spirit. |
 | kiche [email] said at 11:37 AM 12-07-2005: i was going to put that one down just now. |
Randy said at 2:54 PM 12-07-2005: I was going to mention Tremors, but then I imdb-ed it only to find out it was released in 1990.
Regardless, I was apeshit over that movie when I was 12. |
 | abby [email] said at 3:08 PM 12-07-2005: i didn't remember nearly enough movies from the 80s because i was 7 in 1989.
willow is still one of my favorite movies and i almost got a willow tattoo. when the queen turned sortia's army into pigs, something about that turned me on at a very young age.
flight of the navigator was pretty great, also. |
 | myriam [email] said at 3:13 PM 12-07-2005: Yeah, flight of the navigator was my absolute favorite movie as a kid. I still remember this dream I had about it.
The Neverending Story and the Rats of Nimh were pretty enjoyably odd, too. My sister was scared of that dog for years. I was pretty afraid of the rats. |
 | abby [email] said at 3:17 PM 12-07-2005: the rats of nimh, of course. dang. in child fashion i memorized that movie. i watched it a couple years ago and all i remembered really were the songs, and "nicodemus, the boats are ready. we can leave at any time." - justin
this movie also featured both shannon doherty and wil wheaton. |
 | meredith [email] said at 3:22 PM 12-07-2005: That movie is awesome on so many levels. |
 | abby [email] said at 3:36 PM 12-07-2005: but.. was it bizarre? |
 | meredith [email] said at 4:02 PM 12-07-2005: I don't know. I don't see how something can be bizarre if it's animated and about talking animals who wear minimal clothing. |
 | abby [email] said at 4:14 PM 12-07-2005: the movie was so well made, so well-animated, and well-cast (is that what you call it, even if its voice actors? what else would it be i guess) that i never once said to myself "woah.. mice! and rats! haah this is wild"
do you know what i mean meredith
THIS MOVIE RULES im going to netflix it right now! |
 | amy [email] said at 4:20 PM 12-07-2005: nimh is a favorite of flans. i think its weird bc its a cartoon where the big bad is the national institute of mental health. thats creepy. |
 | amy [email] said at 4:23 PM 12-07-2005: Once Bitten! Young Jim Carrey. Classic. |
 | amy [email] said at 1:34 AM 12-08-2005: anything Mr.Cage did in the 80's was brilliant. |
 | myriam [email] said at 1:49 AM 12-08-2005: Moonstruck was the only movie I've ever liked him in, speaking of 80s Cage movies. |
 | amy [email] said at 1:59 AM 12-08-2005: I adore his constant neurosis and bad hair pieces. |
