"Yes, hate is good...Our goal is a Christian nation. We have a Biblical duty, we are called by God, to conquer this country." - Randall Terry, Founder of Operation Rescue
craig [email] said at 8:39 AM 03-30-2004: I am not a huge anime fan. I have enjoyed several Miyazake films. Spirited away was my favorite one of his. Akira and Ninja Scroll were also interesting. Ghost in the Shell I didn't really get into. I also watched Metropolis when it was out at the theatres a few years back. The animation was wonderful, but I thought the story was kind of boring and cliched.
I really like things that aren't genre specific. That being said, my favorite animator is Peter Chung. I loved Aeon Flux, hus segment in the Animatrix, and I really enjoyed Reign the Conqueror, even though I wasn't too happy with the ending.
courtney [email] said at 3:00 AM 04-01-2004: You (a rhetorical you) can't pigeonhole anime as being genre specific. There are genres within anime itself, comedy, drama, action, scifi... just like any other kind of film.
I agree that Metropolis was a bit lackluster in story and character, but the art was great. Miyazaki is my hero, and I've really gotten into the works of Satoshi Kon lately. You might like Perfect Blue (although it's not particularly my favorite of his) because it is a suspense/mystery type film.
Oh, and I joked about the "cartoon" bit. It's something I hear from a lot of purists (read: pretentious anime fans), so I thought I would add it in.
Randy [ url ] said at 7:23 AM 04-04-2004: I really enjoyed Perfect Blue, and I'm not one who's typically a huge anime fan (Miyazaki and a few notable others excepted).
What are some other films of his you'd recommend?
Randy [ url ] said at 6:32 AM 03-30-2004: Aqua Teen is probably the funniest thing on TV right now.
Samurai Jack is a great cartoon.
And if you enjoy feature-length cartoons, anything by Hayao Miyazaki.
Randy [ url ] said at 5:44 PM 03-30-2004: When Sealab is on, the show is fucking brilliant. But when they're off, it's kinda' bad.
Whereas Aqua Teen is a lot more consistent.
But I think they're both great shows.
pokey [email] said at 10:42 AM 03-30-2004: Spongebob is made by the guy who made Rocco's Modern Life. It is way better than Rocco, though. It is perfect!
linus [email] said at 9:25 AM 03-30-2004: I've never seen Spongebob Squarepants, but then again I've never really been into the Nickelodeon toons.
Aqua-Teen is the funniest thing in the world. MC Pee Pants!
I've got the MAXX. Downloaded them via Kazaa. DC just started collecting the comics a few months back. (I also downloaded just about every ep of the Tick.)
I'm really looking forward to the upcoming DVD releases of Johnny Quest and the complete seasons of Batman The Animated Series.
Your mention of Aeon Flux makes me miss cartoons on MTV. Liquid Television was the best. It's nice to wake up to Beavis & Butthead on M2 Sat. mornings recently.
ed [email] said at 6:23 PM 03-30-2004: Most people who hate anime have never seen any done by Miyazaki. Rent Princess Mononoke, and if you don't at least "like" it, I'll pay you back for the rental.
(Offer void if you have actually already seen it. But I don't see how anyone could "hate" Princess Mononoke. Well, except republicans, who are all about destroying the environment.)
rick [email] said at 10:26 AM 04-01-2004: "Princess Mononoke" had a better story than "Spirited Away" but I liked the visuals more for "Spirited Away" more.
The problem I have with most Japanime is that the stories are not usually very good. I can think of exceptions.
ed [email] said at 10:32 AM 04-01-2004: That's why I chose Mononoke, actually. Great story, and excellent visuals. Spirited Away has better-than-excellent visuals, but the story's not as strong.
ed [email] said at 8:29 AM 04-01-2004: Not to defend Mr. Anime-Hater, but he didn't make an argument (such as "anime sucks"). He simply stated his feelings, thus doesn't need any backup argument.
craig [email] said at 11:04 AM 03-30-2004: Did anybody ever get into the cartoon cartoons on the cartoon network. Cow and Chicken was pretty fucked up. I also used to watch two stupid dogs.
neilbert said at 5:37 PM 03-30-2004: Spongebob is voiced by Mr.Show's Tom Kenny, so it's really funny to see him do spongebob. I missed the Spongebob "wave," when it first came out, even though I was one of the first people in the world to ever see spongebob at a secret showing at a con. I recently picked up the first season on dvd and I must say it's really a good, lighthearted show and pretty funny at times. Lately, I have been rewatching all of the Family Guy episodes again. I forgot how much they got away with. In fact Seth McFarlane (the creator) asked the censors in the third season, after they knew they were cancelled to let them have a little leeway in one episode. That leeway led to one of the funniest moments in broadcast history. Stewie was trying to tell a joke, he was calling Brian a "Cha-Waa-Waa," and nobody laughed and then he blurted out, "I don't have fucking impress you," and then walked away. Of course the "fucking" was bleeped, but you knew what he said. :)
Darryl X. said at 6:52 PM 03-30-2004: I saw a Swedish cartoon about World War One once when I was on acid. I can't remember what it was called, but poison gas was represented by diaphanous rotted corpse-clouds that drifted out of the gas shells and clawed their way along the ground and reached out and choked soldiers to death with claw-ey hands. And in one scene, a wounded soldier drowns in his own collected urine in the bottom of a trench. NOTE TO LSD USERS: Avoid this fucking cartoon.
Jake said at 3:29 AM 04-04-2004: it *sounds* like Wizards--
Were the soldiers conjured by a 35mm projector, in a battle between vaughn bode style ninjas?
Cynthia said at 5:00 PM 03-31-2004: Rocko's Modern Life was good too. It came onto Nickelodeon a little while after Ren and Stimpy bit it and didn't last too long. You still see reruns every once in awhile.

brandon [email] said at 11:14 AM 04-01-2004: Don't buy the Beavis and Butthead DVD. Licensing problems prevented them from including the videos and commentary. All that's left is the filler.
Two Stupid Dogs and the remake of Secret Squirrel were amusing.
I saw the triplets and I really dug the watercolor scenery and the way that the ambient sounds drew me into the plot.
The Ooblongs is really hit or miss for me. Supposedly there is a marathon showing of them this weekend on CN.
I like that the mother chain smokes and she's kind of a nympho.
brandon [email] said at 11:46 AM 04-01-2004: Somehow I left this out of my response:
Daria: I loved that one, up until the complications with the boyfriend ensued. The girl-dyad was the kernel of that show. When it broke apart, the show lost its luster.
animaniacs: memorably if the only joke they ever had was when they performed oral surgery on the doktor within a few moments he asks "is it safe?" and then for an anesthetic he's placed under the Zsar's murdered daughter Anastasia. Sometimes, when I'm distracted, I still hum "lake titicaca" between bolivia and peru.
dangermouse: undeniably classic
BANANAMAN : hated it
ren and stimpy: is the foundation of my perception of the world.
beavis and MUFUH'N butthead, man: see above
courage the cowardly dog: is funny, especially when it spoofs flicks, since it's so understated.
sheep in the big city: extremely unfunny puns
stevie and zelda (was it zorba, possibly?) Never heard of this one
johnny the homicidal maniac ???
crazy daisy ed (ANYONE???) ???
space ghost: coast to coast :: has seen better days.
brak presents the brak show starring brak:
tiny toon adventures:god, I hated that show.
cow and chicken: I don't know, watching a cow and chicken cartoon was like nails on a blackboard to me.
