SXSW 2008 / What to do in Austin.

Anyone else going? I will be there Weds til Monday (in mid march). Hit me up! And if you work for a publication that needs a photographer to cover something... let me know.

PS I have only been to Austin ONCE. I will be there for 2 days after SXSW, and I have a car. What should I do. Enlighten me!

for god's sake the one thing you DON'T do around there is actually walk anywhere. you will get all kinds of strange looks and get yelled at by drivers. Only commie's walk in texas

The statehouse tour is pretty cool.

So did I. but when walking from the hotel to the gym in the grassy area _next_ to the road a friend and I were honked at repeatedly by people who were currently afraid that we would jump in front of their cars. Them not ever having seen such a thing, apparently

For God's sake - don't walk in Texas!

Yes! I've experienced this in Houston as well. Walking from a hotel to a Dennys or some place like that. Come to think of it, Dallas too! Same thing, walking from my hotel to go and eat at a Chilis two blocks down the road. I guess the only people that do that in Texas are transients and bums.

Texas A&M in College Station has the least walkable and ugliest campus I have ever seen in my life.

You must must must go to Uchi for sushi.

Reservations recommended

The most creative sushi menu I have ever seen, with really amazing desserts too. Pricey, but I always treat myself once per trip. The Endo Roll is something else.

The Congress Bridge bats are quite a spectacle, but I think they won't be there in March.

The Museum of Popular Culture is kinda cool, you might like that more than I did.

I keep meaning to see the Cathedral of Junk but I never have.

I make sure to get to Rudy's every visit, usually every lunch in fact. There's one on Research Blvd, but I think it's a chain around town. Love that brisket!
woody [email] said at 11:18 PM 02-27-2008:
Also it's a nice little drive to San Antonio to see the Alamo, if you're into that sorta thing.
andrew [email] said at 8:49 AM 02-28-2008:
i bet you thought i forgot huh. casa rio is also one of my all time favorite restaurants in san antonio.
boudet [email] said at 2:52 PM 02-28-2008:
club deville, stubbs, continental club, hole in the wall, those are the only place i can remember, but all were pretty cool.

i went for the first few years of austin city limit festival...i'd like to do sxsw.

I'll be there next weekend to settle wedding arrangements (I'm getting married there in September).

I only realized after we'd planned the trip that SXSW was the week after, or else I'd have waited another week...
rick [email] said at 10:29 PM 02-28-2008:
    Congratulations!

Practically all my local friends go to SXSW, and it creates a kind of odd ghost-town feeling around here. A benefit of staying home during SXSW is that SF ends up having great parking. Same thing with Burning Man!

Anyhoo, my friends use upcoming to plan their event schedules... check out the Austin section, you might find some parties you may have missed.
