Triple-D R.I.P.

I didn't think I would connect with this as much as I have.
When Kurt Cobain died it was a choice he made.
I know the effects of Pantera might have worn off on you.
You may have never been a fan.
I kinda distanced myself from the Dixie Flag Strip Club Pantera vibe.
Same as i stopped diggin RHCP when it semmed so silly-macho.
But for all the times I listened to my Cowboys from Hell Cassette tape and for the way Pantera was the new Metallica when Metallica started suckin'
man those first three albums were a soundtrack to parts of my life.
I really couldn't stomach it when this angry dude from work tried to make a joke about it
This was a person.
and I know that alot of times the reaction to a celebrity death is dark jokes.
This was someone's John Lennon
This was someone's Cliff Burton.
This was someone's #3
This was someone's Tupac
This was someone's brother, friend, hero.

I called my old boss Luis at Atomic Music who was friends with Dimebag. Lou's band Lucy Brown had toured with Pantera and Vinnie and Dimebag recorded Lucy Brown's third album.
I had told Luis how I had thought about calling up him and Eric to thank them for giving me a job for so many years and I thought "Nah that's kinda silly" they would be like....uh... Ok you're welcome.?.?
Well when I found out about the shooting I called up Luis and said I am sorry
and I told him how i was going to say thank you for treating me like family all these years.
I know it's a small thing next to things as big as Death and Loss
but I think for as quick as I (we) curse each other or spead around negative stuff we can all take the time to say we care about each other.
When I called Eric .............ah never mind you get the point.

does anyone know why that guy jumped up on stage and shot him?

that's totally fucked up.

I actually had a (joke) motive all lined up, but one of the last things I want to do in this world is to get Sonny upset with me, so I'll refrain.

that's so ridiculous. what a nutcase!
josh [email] said at 10:13 AM 12-10-2004:
Despite a drizzle and temperatures in the 40s, more than 200 people turned up for a vigil Thursday night in the club's parking lot.

Shawn Sweeney, 22, played "old-school Pantera" on an acoustic guitar and a half-dozen young men held a blue tarp over his head and sang along.

"This is beautiful, this is absolutely beautiful," Sweeney said, referring to the growing crowd.

At one point, a naked young man stood in the middle of the street, arms raised, repeatedly cursing Gale. The crowd cheered boisterously, and the man took off in a full sprint across the parking lot as four police officers gave chase.

He was soon tackled and a man in the crowd yelled out, "We got your bond, dude!" as the streaker was led off in handcuffs.

It's funny how just a few days ago someone referred to Motley Crue as "metal" and I responded "Nah, that's glam." And now we have a frame of reference for metal. Pantera was hard and angry and never tongue-in-cheek.

And Dimebag was as good a crunch-guitar player as there's ever been.

"Run your mouth when I’m not around
It’s easy to achieve
You cry to weak friends that sympathize
Can you hear the violins playing you song?
Those same friends tell me your every word
Are you talking to me?
No way punk"

This is definitely a bummer. Pantera was such a big part of my musical life at one point. I still put VDOP in the ol player from time to time.

this is how i felt when my brother told me that mel gibson died in a car crash.
manbeef [email] said at 2:25 PM 12-10-2004:
i hope this starts a flash of gang-type retaliation a la Norwegian Black Metal or the classic EastCoast/WestCoast gangsta feud. then all the false metallers would know fear.

seriously, he was metal, and he was at least an influential guitar player that made a few thousand kids play want to play guitar, who had probably never really considered it before. i was never into him, but that's beside the point; his death was just senseless.

I was such a huge fan of his when I was just starting to play guitar, and I was never really disillusioned with him the same way I was with the other big metal bands I was into.
