Kara was five minutes late for work today.
Kara opens the office nowadays, because some stupid company initiative has all of her coworkers in DC indefinitely.
So, the office was opened five minutes late.
What can she say to her managers? She can promise to try harder, but she hasn't had the momentum to take on mornings in the last 8 years of working. It's not going to appear out of the blue.
Due to her incompetence, Kara is advised against taking a week of vacation in June.
She reflects on her 10,000 dollars of debt, and her hopes to buy a used car. She thinks about how she wouldn't have been paid for that week anyway.
She wads up her unapproved leave request and tosses it into the trash can with todays junk mail.
*myriam said at 10:21 AM 05-04-2004: for FIVE MINUTES they're not going to let you take vacation?! what kind of company is this?!?!
from what it sounds, completely unsolicited I would advise checking out a temp agency. If you can type and know computers they pay around 15$/hr, not bad. It's steady work, too--some of them even have guaranteed 40hrs/wk. And when you can afford to take vacation you just tell them you're not available to work such and such week.
*myriam said at 10:31 AM 05-04-2004: no, seriously, any company that doesn't realize its employees are its best asset is not going to be a very successful business.
if they feel you aren't performing the way they'd like you to, for whatever reason, there are much better ways of producing the best result for everyone than to take away your vacation like you're some child being grounded.
screw that. I've left jobs for less than that. If you switched jobs you'd probably get a pay raise.

I have no career goals, no desire to "move up," no desire to contribute in any way other than doing exactly what I am required to do.
Its not a matter of punishment. I can take the vacation if I want to, I just probably wont have to bother coming back.
