It's been a while, and this is a few days late, but I feel like posting.
To begin, let me explain a little bit about how my day job works these days. I have a pile of expense reports to verifiy. This means I check to make sure nothing spent was not according to policy and make sure all receipts match up and are in the correct period. Then I initial it and put it in either my 'flag' pile or my 'file' pile. They hired me on as a contractor because they're really behind in this verification. I also file all of the reciepts that have been verified and I do a lot of the approvals right when we recieve reports.
There are two other girls in this section. J is our immediate supervisor and recieves anything we've flagged and eventually either approves or denies it. M basically does what I do, except she's officially hired by the company and is supposed to have a few more duties. Although I don't really know what they are.
Anyway, M is constantly late, always leaves her desk for hours for no apparent reason telling no one where she goes and is constantly filling my 'to do' box with stuff that she hasn't gotten to. Whatever. J is aware of it, so I dont' really care.
Anyway, M called in the other day saying she may not come to work. Whatever. Our boss, G told us. So J and I are looking for a certain report. She says it looks like one that I've audited because of the comments. I go through my 'flagged' pile twice and can't find it. So I start going through M's pile. About a third of the way through the stack, I see reports with my initials on them. I pull them out, there are more, lots more.
"Hey, why's my shit in her pile?" I say. "You're kidding me!" J says and runs over.
There are like 100 reports of mine in her pile. Over half of her 'finished' work consists of stuff that I have done. We show G. My pile is literally two feet higher than hers once my work is returned to it's rightful place. He says 'Thank you' and leaves.
What's been done about her stealing my work and trying to pass it off as her own?
john [email] said at 11:45 AM 01-15-2007: Well, if she were already sleeping with the boss, then she wouldn't even bother to steal your work. My guess is, the boss sees potential to sleep with her someday so he's just going to let it go.
john [email] said at 11:47 AM 01-15-2007: Have you thought about confronting her yourself about it? Just go over to her desk and start looking through her pile of work and when she asks what you're doing say, "I'm looking for some more of my work that you've been stealing."
dave [email] said at 2:21 PM 01-15-2007: i think a better approach would be to pinch a loaf in the other girl's work tray. Stand up and say, "Now that is the product of some hard work!"
dave [email] said at 8:42 PM 01-15-2007: want to hear something else funny to the tune of poop jokes? I have this toilet that is leaking this red, period like blood into the bowl. I swear it looks all poltergeist up in that shit. Well my pop is in, from LA. He's like 70 and we're trying to figure out what it is. He asked if I checked the tank. I said of course, do you think someone would have "top shelfed" me?
I then had to explain to my 70 year old dad what a top shelf was, how I knew, and when i had done it. i'm still laughing.
meredith [email] said at 10:42 PM 01-16-2007: I was waiting for her to approach me about it to be honest. Couldn't wait. But instead she waited until I left to approach J about it. J told me it went something like this:
M: So what's this I hear about this commotion going on around my desk while I was gone?
J: What commotion specifically are you referring to?
M: You and Meredith going through stuff on my desk and talking about me.
J: Actually, Meredith was looking for a report and found a bunch of her work in your tray and I was concerned that you were trying to pass the work off as your own.
M: Well, I didn't try to change the names on the reports.
J: ... no ....
M: So as far as I'm concerned I've done nothing wrong.
J: I'm just concerned that the work is not getting done. When her work was replaced on her pile, the difference between the two piles was significant.
M: Well, I was just looking for something in her reports and I didn't feel like bringing them back to her desk.
J: ... I'm just concerned that you're not doing the work. I find it odd that since Meredith started we are MORE behind than we were previously, not less behind.
M: Well, I didn't change the names on the reports so I didn't do anything wrong.
dave [email] said at 12:19 PM 01-15-2007: they should fire you. the thought of contractors trying to squeeze out permanent employees for their positions. shame on you!
julie [email] said at 10:42 PM 01-16-2007: Tweeeeet! Red flag on the play! Poster neglected to tag this post "Office Hijinx"! That's a 3 comment penalty. Tweeet!
meredith [email] said at 2:14 PM 01-18-2007: So now she's started to add stuff to my 'to do' pile, but she's trying to be sneaky about it. She takes off whatever report I leave on top each evening and puts her 'to do' work underneath it and then replaces the report I leave on top. How do I know this you ask? Because I've been intentionally leaving reports with colorful reciepts on top and then marking the bulletin board behind my basket with a line denoting the height of the pile I left behind.
I've brought this to people's attention, but they aren't going to do anything about it. So I just put the work back in the middle of her pile.
meredith [email] said at 10:50 PM 01-18-2007: She's not in tomorrow so I had an evil thought that maybe I could just increase her stack by like, six inches and be all 'what?' when she came back and freaked out.
dave [email] said at 2:49 PM 01-18-2007: If two of my employees were having this kind of stuff going on, I would take them both in a room and tell them, "You should be embarrassed that your boss is having to intervene, learn to settle your differences like adults."
meredith [email] said at 6:07 PM 01-18-2007: Dave, I asked my supervisor about this and said I wanted to say something to her and she got all nervous and was like, "Well, I don't want you to make her mad, because she's crazy when she's mad. G is going to talk to her today. Just hang on."
