Academic Bending-Over

So I've been the victim of an academic slighting. Research that I did at my undergraduate school has been published without my name on it. Here is the paper. I spent an entire semester working on this fucking thing and then it gets published over half a year later without my goddamn moniker on it.

I'm fairly certain that this was unintentional. My professor is pretty absent minded. Though I do get a certain satisfaction at looking at the screen shots and seeing that the students who took over improved nothing over my model.

The only reason that I am extra-pissed is that I am as-of-yet unpublished and this was published at the most respected conference in surgical simulation. It's only a three page paper, but it's better than what I've got. Bah. I should have two of my own by the end of this semester, so fuck it.

You need to confront your professor and get your name added. Confront the professor and then he can save some face and he'll also owe you.

I know you probably don't have time to deal with it, but that's kind of serious shit. You need to protect yourself and get that changed. Write to the teacher and they can issue and amendment in the journal. It is worth it, don't forget how much time you spent on that thing! Even thought it's complete gobbledygook to me...

I agree. If the shit is yours, make your claim. That's the name of the game in academia, right? Unless you think you'd lose too much by confronting him...in which case I do an occasional side business in anonymous revenge activities.
josh [email] said at 3:09 PM 02-23-2005:
Seriously - there is no bad angle I can see about approaching the Professor. He will realize he made a mistake, probably get your name amended, and then he will owe you and maybe try and help you out in the future in some way.
jeremy [email] said at 3:27 PM 02-23-2005:
Of course I confronted him. I haven't gotten a response yet, though. You can't really get your name added to a paper that's already been published.
jeremy [email] said at 3:27 PM 02-23-2005:
    A conference paper, that is.
josh [email] said at 3:58 PM 02-23-2005:
if they add it as an addendum or whatnot, even if its not in the journal, then you can still list it on your graduate school accomplishments "i'm awesome" sheet, though, eh?
ed [email] said at 10:04 PM 02-23-2005:
Plus you can mention the whole biscuits baking smell on your "I'm awesome" sheet.

No wait... only *I* can do that.
jeremy [email] said at 3:35 PM 02-23-2005:
P.S. this paper is not well written. "we use the reduction power of the skeleton to reduce computations." THE REDUCTION POWER? TO REDUCE? How exactly is reduction power defined. If this mysterious reduction power was defined, wouldn't it be redundant to state that it was reducing computation? BLAH.
shelly [email] said at 4:53 PM 02-23-2005:
i thought not crediting undergraduates for research work was fairly standard?
jeremy [email] said at 12:50 PM 02-24-2005:
Late breaking news: the professors emailed me back and apologized and said it was an oversight because there were "too many cooks in the kitchen" this semester. He's going to try and republish in another forum, with my name at the top.
