donate someone else's money to help fight AIDS

Today, Bristol-Myers Squibb, the pharmaceutical monolith that charges nearly $1,000 for a 30 day supply of one of its HIV/AIDS medications, is donating $1 to the National AIDS Fund for each person who simply visits their website and "virtually lights a candle." The tally is 917,767$ as of this moment.

they probably do, more than you realize.
Not to defend big corporations or anything but most of them actually do have more charity programs in existence than you're aware of.

Many drug companies provide their lifesaving drugs free of cost to people who are unable to afford it (i.e. no prescription plan), who are willing to go through the effort to get it. The seemingly prohibitive cost of medication is specifically set up to disperse the extreme cost of r&d over as many people as possible (all people who who have prescription plan coverage, not just those who need the specific medication).

As a person who takes a $2800 a month medication on a daily basis, at a cost (to myself) of about $20 a month, I do wish there was a better way, especially when my coworkers bitch that insurance premiums are on the rise because some of us are far more costly than they are. While it is far simpler for me, as a gainfully employed person, to make my coworkers pay to keep me alive, there is still hope for those who aren't so lucky.
