jenny jams said at 6:31 PM 04-14-2006: making stuff and doing things isn't quite the same as the old how2 zines. about half the contents of ms&dt come from the tree of knowledge distro, which collected diy articles for their own publication and just never quite managed to get enough for a whole book. So, hold onto your og copy for now, and check out the new book too. i think you can get it on ebay for around 7 bucks. i think it's nuts that you can actually do an ebay search for kyle and stuff pops up. go figure!
jenny jams said at 1:05 PM 04-15-2006: thanks guys. yeah, it was pretty funny in a way- and we definitely looked absurd. the funniest part was that kyle was blowing the siren and screaming at these people, and they were just sort of sipping wine and nibbling tidbits when we came in. i think some of them were scared, and some of them thought it was hilarious, and some of them just didn't know what to think. also, when i gave out the kits/passed out water, i could only say a few lines of consolation like, "i'm so sorry... if there's anything i can do for you let me know," and so on. i got really mixed reactions from this as well. some people just refused to participate in the drama of it all, and would persist in treating me as me- asking me again and again about my house or my situation- and i would just say, "oh, wow, i'm so sorry." These people thought i was dim-witted, never got it, and after asking me a few times to no avail would frustratedly saunter off with kit in hand.
i'm pleased at how the interview turned out. i'm generally suspicious of journalistic portrayals of people, but i think she managed to convey a lot of info without me sounding like a total moron. i was interviewed about my high school once for a newspaper feature, and though the writer didn't record my interview, and only jotted down notes twice during our fifteen minute conversation, the quote she put in the paper next to a big picture of my smiling face had near 10 inappropriately used valley girl "likes" fitted in for effect. "i, like, really like how like my teachers like are real like artists..." gag.
maybe after this i will be less fearful of journalists in the future.
