I don't know what sign designers are thinking sometimes, but this one just happened to accidentally capture my 2008 experience so far. Well done!
And no, this isn't from Japan...

Your strange southern customs frighten us
So I had a meeting with a female employee today and I requested that she travel to one of our facilities in Austin, Texas for a week for some training. Her response was that she is not comfortable travelling unless someone goes with her. She said that in general, she does not believe women should travel to foreign countries alone. I told her I'd talk to HR about her concerns and get back to her.
I'll talk to HR tomorrow, but this really caught me off guard. Do you find her response weird or perfectly normal?
1. This is Austin Texas, not exactly Bogota.
2. She would fly through major hubs or direct.
3. She would be in a nice, major chain hotel like Marriott or Sheraton.
4. She would have her own rental car with GPS and roadside assistance.
5. She would have a calling card and corporate Amex card.
6. She knows several people in the Austin office who would be training with her.
7. She has vacationed in India and Germany recently, but always with husband.
8. She is a generally intelligent and confident person around the office, not meek or insecure in the least. Early 30's.
9. I feel like Jake, except my list is somewhat coherent.
I guess some people just have it in their mind that travelling alone is beyond their comfort level or something. I just don't see the difference between driving to work from home and driving to work from a hotel in a very safe city. She travels alone within Calgary all the time, is she not just as vulnerable? What's the diff?

SFO here I come! - Request for Ideas
Alright, I've got all day Oct 21st, all day on the 22nd, all day on the 28th and most of the 29th too. I've got a car with unlimited miles and free gas. The only thing I must do is visit Alcatraz. Other than that, please post ideas of things to see/do. I'm not big on your typical museums/galleries, but I would consider anything "unique".
I'd like to do a day trip to a marine park or someplace with good wildlife viewing, or maybe caving. I'm also looking for unique culinary experiences, cultural events that may be going on at that time, scenic coastline drives perhaps, crazy but safe places to wander around in the evening, and so on. I would appreciate any ideas you may have!

March Weirdness
I've never been down here in March. I'm in St. Louis right now and this whole "grown-ups getting really excited over college basketball" thing is just weirding me out. I wonder why our 2 countries are so different about this. I mean, I can understand cheering for your old Alma Mater and going to the homecoming game, but if that's what's going on, then almost half of the people in this city went to Duke!

Dream physics
I have to say that most of my dreams follow the known laws of the physical universe, as far as I can remember. But last night I was driving in the right lane of the highway and a tractor trailer started pulling over into my lane without a signal. Normally I would honk and hit the gas, but in this case I angrily rolled down my window and straight-armed that bugger right back into the other lane.
Perhaps I have a case of "Post Superbowl Superhumanism"
I have to admit, it felt pretty good.

Shell game.
I think because I recently read the ancient post where Ed describes Killoggs and somebody (Shell?) talks about her Killoggs dream with the real heads and cartoon heads... I actually had a weird dream that involved Killoggs.
My family and I were driving around North America, mostly through the US. In Seattle I tried to find Shelly, in SF I tried to find Loren, in Boulder I tried to find Evan. Each person had a roommate that told me the person was "on tour" for the next few months. When we finally got to Boston, we stopped into a Walmart and there was a huge tent in the parking lot with Killoggs heads all over the sides. A big banner out front read "Killoggs World Tour" so we went inside. There were autograph tables but only Ben and Josh had a lineup. Everybody had action figures for sale too. It was really loud but there were only about 50 people in the tent. I went to see Shelly.
"Hi, I'm Woody".
"I'm Shelly," she said.
I paused. "Umm, Woody from Killoggs?" No reaction.
"Listen, I'm pretty busy, so do you want an autograph or not?"
"No thanks." This scene was repeated at every single table I went to. Nobody knew who I was. It was like I was disowned now that everybody was a big star signing autographs in a practically empty tent at Walmart.
I was pretty annoyed with the whole scene, so I grabbed the family and said (loud enough for you all to hear) "C'mon guys, we have things to buy in Walmart!"
And we walked out of that tent and never looked back.

Radio taping
Andrew just reminded me that I used to make tapes from the radio. Everytime a song or commercial ended, I would hit record, then stop and rewind if I didn't like the song. I once spent 3 hours waiting for "19" by Paul Hardcastle to come on. Later, I upgraded technology to a dual cassette, so I just let it record then came back later and dubbed the songs I wanted.
The worst was when the DJ would start talking over the fadeout on a song I had just recorded. I wanted clean recordings only!
This practice had been temporarily erased from my memory until just now. I guess I can't relate well to young me, because this all seems like an unlikely thing to do. But I think some of my friends did this too.
