Rini is one month old today. And despite our rocky start with the birth, she's kicking ass and growing like kudzu. She's up to nearly 11 pounds now, and is 23 inches long. She just smiles and coos at us all day long. Well, when she's not attached to my boob in her quest to hit 12 pounds or yelling at me to put her back at the magic milk bar.

Balancing Forces
I constantly have someone's feet jabbing into my ribs. I really shouldn't complain too much. It means that she is keeping her head down, with her back to the left, like a good girl. I hope she stays that way for the next two months, tucking her little chin under and keeping her hands out of the way. She could come out 6.5 weeks from now and be considered full term. More likely, though, I expect her in 10 weeks. We don't really do "early" babies in my family. Nor do we do small babies. I weighed more than 9 pounds and was 24 inches long when I was born. I doubt Rini will be any smaller, which is why we have to have these nightly mother-daughter chats about "optimal fetal positioning." I hope genetics serve me well here. My mother's labors were short -- the longest (me) was only 12 hours. My brother -- Mr. Chubby at a little over 10 pounds -- shot out in 6 hours. My sister was in between. My mom had us all naturally, without medication or other interventions, which is pretty amazing since most OBs practicing now would be hounding her about how it's impossible to have such "big" babies, and would want her to have scheduled C-sections for all three.
I'm spending a lot of time at home these days. I cook most of our meals. I clean and organize as much as I can, pretty much to the point of exhaustion. I recarpeted my basement a few weeks ago. Nesting hormones are no joke, and cannot be resisted, even when your feet are killing you and you think your ligaments are actually turning into rubber bands.
We had an amazing baby shower in Louisiana a few weeks ago. Rini has more clothes than W and I put together. They are pretty much all pink.
I'm increasingly wishing I could have her at home, which is where my midwives catch most of their clients' babies. But the insurance company won't let me. Well, they won't stop me either, but they won't pay for the delivery if I plan a homebirth. It's really quite stupid. The MW has no special equipment at the birth center that she wouldn't bring here to my house, and I am actually closer to a hospital at my house than I will be at the birth center, should there be an emergency. I'll labor at home as long as I can stand it before heading over there. I just don't look forward to having to possibly battle traffic to get to Old Town Alexandria when I am in active labor. Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be at like 3 in the morning. I'm sure W would LOVE that. I did have a dream a while back about getting stuck in the I-395 tunnel during labor. How's that for Freudian imagery.

Well, how about that!
We just got back from the 20 week ultrasound, and it looks like the peanut (who hasn't actually been the size of a peanut in a long time) is a little girl!
We couldn't get her to face us head on, though. But she is perfectly healthy and has the cutest little fingers and toes.
