normalcy, lonliness, beer

Man.. Mass has been weird lately. I've been pretty much isolated the whole time. I've recently moved into a new apartment. It's completely empty.. I have few possessions. Right now I am sitting in a beach chair in the middle of an empty living room. Megan is moving up in two weeks but these last few weeks are torture.

I've finally made a new friend. We go fishing on the lake near his house, prepare and eat the fish, have bonfires and play with his amazing little kids. We drink mate' and sit in the sun and talk about random shit. Unfortunately he is moving to Pittsburgh in a few weeks. I'm going to miss him. It's really shitty timing..

Weekend with henry

My good friend henry took a series of buses to visit me this weekend. Friday night he got in a bit late after being hung up in traffic outside of boston. It was a little late to go back into the city by the time he got in so we tried to find a decent bar in my area to talk in. We were unsuccessful, so we ended up sitting, talking and drinking in the screened in porch where I'm staying. Saturday morning we took the T into Boston. We got lunch at Quincy market and then got a few beers around 11 at the Beantown Pub. The next few hours were spent laying around Boston Common and the Public Gardens with a bit of a buzz going on. The weather was fantastic. We moved on to Cambridge and did some shopping. We watched a few different musicians playing on street corners and got some tea at Tealuxe. We tramped around randomly trying to find a place to get a good steak. We had to settle for some small bar/restaurant where we spent a lot of money for food that wasn't exactly mind blowing. Afterwards we were both too full to go to John Harvard's for beer as was originally planned.
Sunday we drove up the northern coast to check out some beaches. We first stopped in Beverly to find the place where his grandmother had grown up. We checked out Marblehead, Salem and Gloucester before settling on Rockport. Rockport was beatiful. We sat on some rock outcroppings beside the water and watched boats and clouds drift around. The coast line looks awesome from there. I felt like I was in another country. It probably helped that a few eastern european girls found their way on the the rocks and being rattling on in some language I couldn't discern and were oiling each other up. We found the best italian ice on the planet that didn't make my lips quite as blue as usual. After spending a few hours there we went back to Salem to get some souveniers from the "Witch Dungeon" for Henry's mom. After that we decided to go back to Framingham (where I live) and get some seafood from Legal Sea Food (weird name). I had the wood grilled scallops... he had some sort of casserole. We went home and watched the Eagles/Raiders game and talked about life.

I dropped him off at the Ashland rail station this morning. Twas a great time.

Stuff

So.. I've been whiling away up here in mass. A paper I wrote got accepted to a conference in Switzerland, so I get to fly there in October. Work has been pretty awesome. They offered me a full-time job here. I think I might take it. It might take some adjusting moving to this area, but this is pretty much my dream job so I can't pass it up. I would be coming back to MD at least until January to defend my Master's thesis and wrap all of that shit up. I guess I'll either continue the PhD here or just forget about it all together.. I'm not sure about that part yet. Megan is coming to visit today through monday or possibly wednesday. I'm really stoked about that... We're going to spend the weekend in boston and wander around. She's not overly keen on the prospect of moving to MA.. maybe I can sway her opinion.

I've been spending all of my time watching movies and reading. I haven't smoked since I got here (about a month). I haven't been drinking much either. I joined a gym too. Mostly out of boredom. I dont know. Times are strange.
